Eh. I don't think Karen comes off great here. I don't take anything seriously that people tell me online before I've met them. Wait to meet the guy and then judge him.

I don't think Karen gets off sounding any better than Joe in this exchange. Sure, he has a streak of misogyny and may have trouble getting back to people (though honestly, if they haven't met, why's she so important that he needs to get back to her?)... but she just comes off as shrill and egotistical (google me? REALLY?).

This should be recategorized as crap emails from crappy people.

and he has a point - you DON'T bring up rape in the first conversation you have with someone you're interested in. That's just weird.

Dude, this guy's clearly an ass, but don't devalue the Jewish High Holy Days, okay? The Yom Kippur fast fell on a Monday this year. The guy didn't want to go out because he couldn't eat or drink. That's like saying, "Man, that Lent. What a shitty excuse for not coming out for pizza/chocolate/coffee/[whatever that person gave up] with me!"

Clearly both of these specimens are of the "self-involved morons" section of the gene pool, just to say off bat. I rolled my eyes during that entire thing and I definitely don't agree with anything Polanski-related.

But (and I'm not criticizing others here who participated) there's something to be said for just letting it go. I mean, Christ. Reading something like this and then deconstructing it seems like a colossal waste of time. IMHO, this thing doesn't even deserve a read, much less a hearty discussion about their behaviors.

It seems to me that the Crap Email From a Dude thing is kind of in that genre too. It doesn't really serve any purpose except to show "Hey, there's a lot of douche bags out there and here's one of them who found his way onto the computer". You know? It just pisses us off and makes us type up whole paragraphs (like this), and perhaps we feel just a little more disheartened.

This was just cringe-worthy. He sounded like a disinterested ass. She sounded desperate yet self-absorbed (google me NOW!). If you don't give a shit what a guy thinks, then quit sending dumbass emails. And the narcissistic claim was pretty rich coming from Miss "You'll get a squillion hits once you figure out my last name."

"I'm not googling you. It's no fun when someone WANTS you to do it. Also, where is your creativity? You are calling me by the nickname I gave you?

    tsk tsk"

1.) Contrary 2.) Overly critical 3.) Aggressiveness conflated with flirtation 4.) Controlling 5.) Condescending.

And there's something else I'm missing. But what is it? I think it's an inflated ego mixed with a penchant for the absurd. These days the two go hand in hand. (Yes, THAT'S why no one likes you. Because you're so unusual. Yes, you just keep telling yourself that.)

Misunderstood geniuses are a dime a dozen these days.

Um. I wouldn't consider his reference to Chinatown a rape joke, just an allusion. And then she jumped down his throat about it. I don't feel sympathetic.

I think the problem here (in Karen's case) is needing to have the last word. I'm so very familiar with that feeling, but sometimes it's best to ignore that impulse. I think Joe's last response was overly dramatic, but he must have thought that's what it would take for her to stop needing to get in one. last. jab.
