i will be absolutely heartbroken if they buy a designer dog from a breeder instead of adopting from a shelter or rescue group.

I strongly recommend a purebred Standard Poodle from a good breeder. I researched dog breeds for 2 years before choosing a standard poodle. Standard Poodles are hypo-allergenic, non-shedding, intelligent, agile, athletic, sensitive, protective yet gentle with children, human-like, curious and once you've had one, you won't want anything else. I recommend a black or a white poodle, as they tend to have the best temperaments and are easiest to train. The Standard Poodle has style and substance, very much like you, Mr. President-Elect! All the best in making the best decision for your family.

    Boxer!

They love kids and will do anything to protect them. It would be like having a wiggly Secret Service agent!

I think that Malia and Sasha should have the major say in what kind of dog they get. The dog is for them, not us. Malia has been doing research on dogs that won't set off her allergies. She has already selected a dog. If she wants a goldendoodle, and Mom and Dad think she did some good research on the subject, then she should be able to get the one of her choice, as long as Sasha agrees, too. In fact, she should be able to go to a family that has a couple of goldendoodles that they bred, and see which puppy is going to choose her.

I had a maltese mix growing up, so I'm biased toward them. I wouldn't recommend them, though, or a bichon frise. Unless they want their pup peeing all over the white house carpet - dogs in the bichon family (bichon frises, havanese, bolognese, maltese and coton de tulear) are notoriously hard to housebreak.

We had our Barney for 12 years and he was peeing on the fireplace til the bitter end
