    For a moment I was horrified and had a sick feeling - I thought this lady was scalping real first editions and making them into purses. It was as if she was murdering babies for their soft baby perfect for leathergoods skin. Now that I see it's felt, I feel better. #olympialetan

    The purses are limited-edition and sell for about $1500 each, and is exclusively sold by a distributor based in Paris.

    I think I would have an easier time attaining an original first-edition book than one of the purses. :( #olympialetan

    @ElleDriver: Good thought, but first editions of books like these can be astoundingly expensive, especially if the dust-jacket is present and in good condition. They add a LOT of value. Catcher in the Rye, first edition with jacket is $11,000!! #olympialetan

    @melliejellybelly: My fault for not looking closely enough. When I lived in Washington D.C. there was a craftsman who made bags from actual book covers. They were sold at Eastern Market. I thought that the look was really neat, but was sad about the books. I am now on board. I think that as long as the artist uses books from the public domain there isn't necessarily a copyright issue... #olympialetan

    @melliejellybelly: That would have been Rebound Designs, aka Me. All of the books I use are discards from libraries, so they were damaged/about to be thrown away. Don't be sad, I am saving them! See more at www.rebound-designs.com.

    @caitlin003: Based on the etsy site, you do lovely work. I freaked out a bit reading this item initially, because I missed the "based on" bit. I have no problem with repurposing discarded/damaged books - I think you're giving them new life - but the idea of using first edition dust jackets scared me. #olympialetan

    I want these now. Like, RIGHT NOW.

    She's right about book covers these days. It is rare that I'm impressed with cover art lately, which makes me sad. Granted, I realize everyone is not a voracious reader, but I'm the type who will go to the bookstore and buy books based solely on the cover or the blurb, and I always know I'll enjoy them, because I enjoy reading*. But I must admit that good cover art goes far.

    *This led me recently to reading The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters which I never want to finish, because I'm enjoying reading it so much, even though I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN THE BOOK. #olympialetan

    @likepenguins: I'm the same; unless there's a new one coming out by a fave author that I've been dying for, I'm very much a cover-judger. That and "Is it long enough to keep me occupied for a long enough period of time to justify paying money for it?" Which is how I came to own The Crimson Petal and the White, the cover of which would make an AWESOME purse. #olympialetan
