I hate to say it but if the Koreans were bleating about "protecting the sanctity of marriage" with this ridiculous law at least it would seem a bit more believable than the preposterous stance taken by the yes on prop 8 bunch. Adultery is an actual threat to marriage unlike the threat of the imaginary Gay Conversion Brigade that's supposedly trying to win children over to their 'side'. By comparison this Koren law almost seems reasonable.

I can't believe that Korea would do this. I suppose it's to be expected of a country that's something like 63rd out of 70 in gender empowerment indexes. Are 68% of Korean men in jail? No. Should they be? Umm...

I kind of like this. Marriage is pretty much just a legally binding contract- if it is broken, their should be legal consequences. But the person she was having an affair with should be an accessory to the crime, and I can't help but wonder if this is enforced as strictly for the men.

@Ratinski: Yeah, there's a pretty big difference between paying damages (which in some cases, does happen through alimony) and getting a criminal record. Or even jail time.

I feeling is that jailing people for a private matter like adultery is wrong. However, I do not have the graciousness of spirit and commitment to my principles that, if my husband cheated on me, would allow me to refrain from pointing and laughing as they carted him away to the big house.

According to a survey carried out last year, nearly 68% of South Korean men and 12% of women confess to having sex outside marriage.

I wonder if the amount of men sentenced/jailed reflects this. Somehow I doubt it.
