I have a lot of thoughts on this topic, but will try to distill them into a few key points.
- John's father abandoned him, and his mother was killed in a car accidend when he was a kid. I won't criticize him for whatever coping skills (sarcasm, creativity) he developed to deal with that kind of pain.
- I believe he and Yoko genuinely loved each other. They made each other happy, and who on earth can begrudge them the few years of happiness they spent together?
- The "War is Over/Happy Christmas" billboards they put up around the country were awesome: [www.observer.com]
@Gumbina80: I should have done the same. I get all over-excited and defensive when it comes to Lennon. I've loved him and his music since I was about 6.
There's a story Paul tells about how he and John were talking about how AWESOME it would be if Frank Sinatra covered one of 'their' songs. Meaning 'another Lennon-McCartney orginial'.
And the only Beatles song Frank ever sang was 'Something.'
Elvis covered it, too. It's probably the most beautiful Beatles song ever done.
Paul did a great cover of it, not long after George died, on his Back in the U-S tour. The only accompaniment was Paul playing a ukelele, (I know, sp) -- and instrument George collected.
Paglia just seems like a Lennon fangirl. Lennon was a big boy and he could make up his own mind about his band and who he was married to. I hate it when people blame the women! Men have minds too. (Its woman on woman crime, I believe.)
Also, I wish the Barbie post was working. I know so many people hate on Barbie, but I really like her as a doll for the same reason I like Vogue. Fantasy. I also hate Bratz and Cosmo for the same reason- skankification of American young women. Barbie is classy.
This is slightly off-topic but I just really want to brag.
Sean Lennon lives super close to me, like within a couple of blocks, judging from how many times I've seen him around my tiny corner of the Village. FOR EXAMPLE: Boyfriend and I were having a late drunken lunch at our favorite Mexican place when these two kids come in and sit next to us. We were the only four patrons in the restaurant. In conclusion, I totally had margaritas and burritos with John Lennon's son, who is the spitting image of his father.
@hellodarling loves president obama!!!: I loved that story. I know a lot of people hate on Sean, but I like him. And yes, he looks exactly like his dad these days.
John Lennon was an asshole. Like other posters have said above he was horrible to his first family. This is the guy who wrote 'imagine no possessions' while owning not one but two apartments in the Dakota. I think he fell in love with Ono because it made him look good. He wanted to be more than a popstar, and along comes this artist who actually took him seriously. And then there's the fact that he played ball with the FBI in order to stay in the US.
Oh and I always thought George was the most interesting Beatle.
@Dr. Winston OBoogie aka MonkeySeeMonkeyDo: Please don't be scared. I was expressing my opinion. I wasn't aware any of Lennon's relatives would be reading this post. Are you an aunt or an uncle?
Anyone who says "Saturday Night Live's not as good as it used to be," and "Yoko broke up the Beatles" should be shot. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but I have heard them both so many times it makes me sick, and 3/4 of the people who say it don't know anything about the Beatles or SNL.
@KristaJulieva: AMEN to the former statement. I instantly want to not be friends with the people who say that. Because, I mean, Amy Poehler! I will always be on the defensive for Lorne and the show.
Camille Paglia seems to 'know' a lot about a relationship with which she had no direct contact (per my, admittedly, quick search). It was generous of her to clarify that for the rest of us.
I always thought it was terrible bullshit to blame her for the breakup of the Beatles, not to mention terribly demeaning to Lennon. What, he didn't have a mind of his own to know what he was doing? What misogynistic crap all that stuff is.
@ninles: Yeah, I dont get it. Admittedly I wasn't alive or even close to it at the time but he was an adult, even if changed so much (and thats disputed) that he broke up the Beatles, thats his responsibility not hers. Its like some of my guy friends who get mad cause one of our friends spends all of his time with hi gf and does her bidding, she might be controlling but he allows it to happen and continues with completely acquiescent behavior. Blaming the woman is just an excuse so the hero can remain unsullied.
@saltine: 'She might be controlling but he allows it'?
So if a husband beats his wife, we should be accosting the wife because she doesn't leave her husband? He's beating her, but she's allowing it to happen by staying with him.
I don't mean to call you out or anything, but that statement just caught my eye.
@Gundam_Halo: Yea, in no way was this referring to an abusive relationship. You're looking for something that isn't there, being "whipped" and being emotionally or physically abused are two different things.
Sorry but this bothers me, when at any point am I referring to any type of abuse? You can say my anecdote is poor, but im talking about supposedly controlling people changing (in their friends minds) personalities, not abuse.
@saltine: Who's to say that your friend in question isn't emotionally abused in a way that his girlfriend controls the relationship?
I don't mean to drag this out, nor am I trying to start a argument, your statement just seemed odd. More so when you reply back saying that controlling someone to the point of changing their personality isn't abuse.
@Gundam_Halo: I was saying thats what some of the friends say, not that its true, since he doesnt want to hang out with them as much. And was basically saying he just lives a different lifestyle now, at any point he could get out of it and he might do so. And being whipped is not the same control as abusive ones, it just means (in the general unfeminist sense) that the woman wears the pants. He does what she wants to do more than the other way around, but she doesnt physically abuse or emotionally undermine him. I would never condone abuse emotional or physical, male or female, but being whipped is just basically one person saying they want to take a back seat in the relationship. They dont want to plan or have to figure out anything to do.
@saltine: pretty much just look at the first paragraph of liz11685's post for what I am trying to say. She says what I wanted to express but in an infinitely better way.
@PilgrimSoul: I take offense to your suggestion that male-urination-as-arc- of-transcendence feminism is lesser than other forms of feminism. all forms of feminism are equal. Except for koala-on-gorilla-scat-play- as-just-another-brick-in -the-wall feminism--that is prima facie just plain stupid.

For some reason people just cant see their idols in stable relationships with women who are clearly not groupies and awesome in their own merit.

Male urination really *is* a kind of accomplishment, an arc of transcendence. A woman merely waters the ground she stands on.
