(really white) med student in boston here - everyone always says O-B-Guyn (as in rhymes with fine) or O-B-G-Y-N. I prefer the first one, it is quicker, altho O-B-Gynie is cuter. I didn't even realize that not everyone would recognize O-B-Guyn, maybe this is why sometimes people look at me like I'm crazy... or maybe it's cuz I'm crazy.

@messyhead: I think OB- Guyn is the Boston term for , as that is what I have heard from medical people there. I cannot attest to what it is in any other part of the country- in So Cal where I live now we usually call it the gynecologist among friends, I don't really know any medical people.

Heard it myself; lived in Chicago for seven years, and worked in healthcare for three of them. Also dated a doctor-type for two years there, so yes, another Chicago data point.

I'm an ex-midwesterner (though with no medical background) and have never heard this usage before, but Obama says it with such total assurance that I believe in its realness. This is a guy who had the Presidential oath memorized word for word; he wouldn't get something like this wrong.

    Fascinating linguistic discussion, BTW!

@ceejeemcbeegee: Bachelor at Large: I'm a native Chicagoan (white, from the burbs) and grew up calling them obi-guy-nees.

Mostly I call mine my "obstetrician" now that I'm knocked up and my "gynecologist" when I'm not. Or my "lady parts doctor" when I'm being funny. But my mom and all her peers go to the obi-guy-nee. And sometimes I still slip and say obi-guy-nee, but living my early independent (and ob/gyn-going) adulthood outside the midwest kinda knocked it out of my vocabulary.

I'm in medical school, and most of health care professionals I've met say either "Obie Guyn", the second word of which would rhyme with "fine", or they spell it out. I've never heard anyone say "Obie Guynee".

Malpratice rates for Ob/Gyns are shocking, though; they can get into the six figures. It's brutal and it definitely drives some people away from the specialty.
