okay so i spent the last 4 years of my life completely devoted to politics (those 4 years being college). i majored in it, joined many clubs devoted to it, studied abroad at 2 international poli sci schools, and worked in the field before and during the elections. i must say that i am completely burned out because it seems that the only people attracted to office are complete narcissists. this is my experience and i've had a fair amount of it, but nowhere as much as i'm sure some of you have. can someone please help me reinstill my faith in the system? are there any politicians worth supporting? i believe in government in theory but in practice all the people drawn to it are scumbags who are just looking for an ego boost!!!! right now i still have obama on his pedestal and i'm scared to death that he's going to fall :( HELP ME JEZZIES!!!!

@penny_lane: I understand you feeling a bit upset, but politics by its very nature can change people. While I believe that most enter it in order to do good, there are so many games that are played that even the best person can get caught up in fishy circumstances. Keep the faith. Remember that we now have Pres. No drama Obama, and I don't think he is going to allow alot of shenanigans.

@penny_lane (loves penny_cruz): Oh my Lord, you sound like me. Political Science major, secret idealist. Do what I did and start putting your faith in good journalists instead, who are usually in it for the right reasons. Or help lesser-known politicians -- people are usually more idealistic when they have less power.

Politicians can change the world, though, and many of them do great things, even if for cynical or downright wrong reasons. Politics really isn't about individual people... it's about ideas and policies and ways to help others and make the world a safer place. If you decide to go into politics, don't be discouraged by the egomaniacs around you -- you're doing a great thing, and they may be, too.

Maybe you should work on Russ Feingold's reelection campaign to get you feeling all hopey again. ;) He's facing a tough fight in 2012, apparently.

I hope it was not his Mexican half involved in shady dealings. Lord knows that Mexican-Americans have enough prejudice to worry about without the "Mexicans Participate In Pay-For-Play Politics" stereotype piled on top.

since when has an politician not guilty of any wrongdoing been concerned about a delay in bureaucracy that would ultimately exonerate him? Most politicians realize to resign from any post or decline the nomination after a scandal erupts is pretty much an admission to guilt in the public eye (see Blago, Nixon, etc.) ....seems pretty fishy to me.

@reita1: I'll admit that was my first thought, but Obama has taken the transition very seriously and because of the state we're in currently has made it clear he wants to hit the ground running. There was enough shit hitting the fan with the IL governor and Rohm, even when it was clear that there was no wrongdoing, where I can see why Richardson would want to bow out even if he knows he'll be cleared after the investigation. Right now we need a commerce secretary who can begin working, unhindered, from the get-go.

After a little processing I now think this could prove Richardson to be the excellent leader I always thought he was. More concerned for the public good than his own.

The phone calls! The canvassing!

How could you, Bill?! You were the cuddliest of all the candidates (actually, I chose to volunteer for him because of his strong diplomatic background, but still)!

@MsKatherineSpeaks: I hope he's not guilty, he's one of only a few politicians that I actually sort of like and respect - which I can say about him in an educated manner since I used to live in his state and was his neighbor for a time. I also read all this rumor-y stuff about him being grabby and was like, huh? Now this money stuff... for the moment I am choosing to believe that it's 20% real and 80% crap.

@penny_lane (loves penny_cruz): I was working for Edwards for a while in Iowa and I was totally crushed when that came out. Like, still a little touchy about it crushed.

Can I still have some faith in Bill? I mean, I had faith in John and he turned out "guilty", but I really think Richardson is innocent here.
