OMG, my friend's ex-boyfriend had a Portuguese water dog, and that dog was nothing but romp and idiocy and adorable. The Obamas are going to have such a wonderful time with him.
@Ipomoea: I think their family and living situation is perfect for a PWD...they are rambunctious and need lots of exercise and attention. What could be better than all the attention Bo will get from WH staffers and all the running and swimming he can do at the WH. Plus having two adorable just the right age little girls to play with. He's a fortunate PUP!
I also hope that people considering a PWD because they've discovered them through the Obamas will read the excellent breed club information about the needs of PWDs and why they are not the dog for everyone.
I thought they were going to get a rescue dog? I don't have a problem with a dog given as a gift, but there was a big deal made over them proclaiming they'd get a dog from a rescue centre... will they still do that?
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: Ok, nevermind. It looks like the article that said that Bo came from a shelter doesn't exist anymore. What I found now is that Bo came from a kennel, but he had a home before, but was returned to the kennel. Probably that's where the confusion came from. In lieu of adopting from a shelter, the Obamas are going to make a donation to the Humane Society.
@janetschmanet: I read that the dog was originally with another family who couldn't keep him, so technically he's a rescued dog, it just happens that the middleman is a senator instead of a shelter.
@janetschmanet: There are also very few PWDs and breeders tend to be very closeknit, so there aren't a whole lot of them coming through rescue. It could well have taken several years to find a suitable rescue dog. This dog is more correctly called a "rehome" rather than a "rescue".
@Isi: And I think it wonderfully demonstrates how responsible dog breeders deal with the animals that they breed. Bo wasn't dumped in a shelter, he was sent back to the woman who bred him and promised to take responsibility for him forever.
and ohmygoodness that is the cutest little dog. i wish i could get a dog right now, but as a college student that seems like a very irresponsible decision.

I'm also loving Bo's sweet expression of submission and self-confidence at the same time.

Also, I'm struck again by how normal Sasha and Malia look. They always look very cute and trendy but little-girl appropriate. Nice twists, Malia!
