So far I've been hearing 'better insulation of houses' (um, what?!), 'raising of pension age to 67' (um, fuck), 'raising of taxes on houses worth more than 1 mln' (um, yay).
Ah, and now Parliament is booing!

@haguenite: We have the better insulation plan too. It's got something to do with creating construction jobs and lowering energy consumption (less heating required).
But don't get me started on the clusterfuck that is our government and their fucking incompetence in dealing with the recession.

@NefariousNewt: I often wonder that too. They can't even decide on one place to govern from, so they move all the offices and files a couple of times each month.
I... don't even know.

Sometimes I wonder if I should be a populist politician. You can shout all sorts of fun stuff like "This proposal is a joke" and "Joe the Plumber will suffer" without actually having to contribute anything real to the discussion.

I just spent half an hour yelling at some computer program on the phone system at my foul little health insurance company. So now ****** Health has a recording of my screaming repeatedly "WHAT KIND OF IDIOT DO YOU THINK I AM? I can tell you aren't a real person!!!!" I may be extra sensitive to the topic.
Bastards.

...well, in actuality, I don't think I'm necessarily against his plans, but more against what Bernanke and Geithner are planning.

I know, I know- it's a fools argument, b/c smoking does kill, and the tax is to go towards children's health insurance- but can't we at least pretend to acknowledge what blatant fuckery this is? Last time I checked, it's still my decision if I want to do bad shit to my body- It's MY body after all.
I know that according to that argument, it's like I'm not taking into account that the governemnt DOES control a lot of what goes into our bodies- and the whole BS behind keeping marijuana illegal- and sin taxes allready existing and everything- but I voted for Obama because he promised Change- Change that would help. Lower Taxes. Govermnet Transparency- ya know? Raising cigarette taxes does none of that...
I personally don't think this has anything to do with children's health insurance- and everything to do with control. I'm not implying that this leans towards "socialism" or anything - but something stinks here. Obama is a smart man, and he's gotta start somewhere, but making us average folks pay more for our vices is NOT a good place.

I'm sorry-I'm not so good w/ html or I'd link it for you so you can click on it. There is a whole host of info about it floating around on the net.
Basically they are imposing a 60 cent tax hike on every pack of cigarettes, and most retailers are jacking their prices along w/that, preemptively to counteract some of the slacked off sales that the tax will cause, therefore pushing the price of most smokes, depending on your area up about $1 per pack. This is old news in NY however, where I hear some are paying upwards of $8 per pack.
Down here in the dirty south, we were paying $3.50 to $4 per pack- they're now all above $5 per pack.

nevermind about the linking- guess I did it right. :)

We do not know what Newt Gingrich has said or done (or not) to atone for the business of cheating on his cancer-ridden wife, nor do we know what has gone on between him and his Creator regarding his two divorces and his upcoming conversion. I don't like him, for all manner of reasons, but the question is not whether or not he has the moral standing to oppose abortion and/or make political hay out of his opposition to abortion, or even if he has the moral standing to become a Catholic. If you believe in God, that's up to God.
The question is whether we in this country believe that the opposition of some (including Newt Gingrich) to a procedure they believe to be murder is good enough reason to deny the procedure to the many, many women who do not so believe, and require it for their lives to be whole.

Finally, sin is a deeply personal thing. It's basically seen as deliberately doing something that you know is wrong and it's viewed as a turning away from God. This is why, for example, the Ten Commandments are often translated as Thou shalt not murder as opposed to thou shalt not kill, because sometimes killing is necessary and is not ultimately a turning away from God. (the fish for example that Jesus served up on the mount I'm pretty sure were dead).

The year I graduated, in 2003, the commencement speaker was the blind hiker who reached the summit of Everest, and he was awesome.

A friend's sister is graduating this year, and as far as she can tell, most people are elated that the President is speaking at their commencement, especially since Obama overwhelmingly carried Notre Dame's student body in the last election.
This is NOT how everyone affiliated with that school acts. Once again, it's the most crazy and pathetic single-issue morons who are shrieking the loudest against a president whose stand on nearly every issue except those relating to fertilized eggs is very closely aligned with the Church's teachings around social justice.

If the church were run by people like him, people with some perspective and with passion about things that don't center on forcing pregnancy on women who do not wish to be pregnant, I would totally still be Catholic.

I suspect if they polled the student body at Notre Dame, they'd find most of them don't believe everything the Pope believes in.

And have you SEEN the tailgating that happens before every single home football game? It's like Sodom and Gomorrah in the parking lots. (However, people protest that, too, but the only response that the protesters get is drunk people trying to take pictures of them without the protesters noticing.)
