Knitting as fluxus event? ...I guess. Knitting as political statement? Arguable. Knitting as subversive? I don't think so.

Crafts have often been viewed as women's work, and thus denigrated, though in many cases they were women's only creative outlets because they were perceived to be serving functional purposes (making garments, baskets, pots, etc.)
Many commenters seem bothered by the very fact that the artists' time and energy is not being used to produce garments for the needy (ie something "useful"). That, if anything, seems to prove there are prejudices against knitting and even art in general that these knitters are successfully exposing and even transgressing.

Sorry!

so, my issue with this really has nothing to do with the notion of 'craft' as 'art', but with the fact that once you've seen one be-sweatered tree or lamppost, you've seen them all.

So 'I choose my choice' = behaving as though something is empowering, when it's not.

As a festive, winsome thing to do, I could sort of see it, even if it doesn't appeal to my own aesthetic sense. But "subversive and politically motivated"? Do they have the same dictionary I have?
Unless they're like, knitting a teenager who got knocked up because no one told her about birth control, thus using the medium to subvert what is essentially a care-less notion of taking care of our children. Or something. But that right there would probably be really hard. I'm not a knitter. I don't know.

Digital photography makes photography easier for the masses to do, does not make it any less an art.
