    i fly so often i know the safety monologue by heart- but i still patiently sit and at least give them the respect of making eye contact even if i'm thinking about something completely diff. it's just a matter of respect. clearly.

    I liked how fun and happy they all were. I've seen so many of these things with boring voiceovers and generic computer-generated visuals. These people would be watchable even if they were wearing real clothes.

    @Nibbles: Ha! To be fair, "bare" and "bear" are the same in the US.


    One of my Kiwi friends had horrible trouble in a pub -- tried "beer" a few times, then specified "Beck", and finally was handed a pen by a confused bartender. A "bic" brand pen.


    I can understand you all just fine now, but it takes a good 30 seconds of you talking for my ear to shift into gear if I've been stateside too long.

    I always make myself watch those videos out of superstition (as in: otherwise we'll crash, and the one time I have neglected to listen to the safety instructions is the time I reallyreally need them).

    Does anybody know if there is any example of any plane ever crashing from cruising altitude into the ocean and not instantly killing all passengers? My impression has always been that all this seat cushion as flotation device, "make your way to the emergency slide" stuff is wishful thinking.

    I have to say, people are disgustingly disrespectful during the safety instructions. I flew to London and back recently, and people were not only having conversations, but actually SHOUTING at friends a couple of rows back.

    I mean, I know everything they're going to say. I can pretty much word for word do it with them. But I can at least shut up and look like I'm being attentive for 5 minutes.


    So yay this!


    Also, Singapore Airlines? You might want want to change the person you use for your videos, because she keeps pronouncing "as shown" as "ashern" and it's really quite confusing.

    @heatherwritesstuff: True that. Oh, those magic hot towels! What I wouldn't do for those. Also, the amazing in-flight entertainment and the little menus and the free candy bars and soft drinks in the galley at night, oh my! They're fantastic.


    But yeah, it took me three flights to understand what "fasten your seatbelt ashern" meant.

    @haguenite: Oh, and I meant to add this above - absolutely on basic politeness. Even when I'm not paying attention, I at least stay quiet and pretend like I'm listening, especially when I'm right by the flight attendant. Even though I know the whole speech, it's just basic etiquette. (Hell, I know what my great aunt is going to say every time I see her, and I don't start texting while she asks me when I'll be on Jeopardy.)

    @Laulau: I have to admit, last year on a flight to London my friends and I started mouthing and acting out the instructions along with the flight attendants and we cracked one of them up so bad he almost couldn't finish.

    It was hilarious, but I kinda feel bad about it too.

    @BadHairLife: Seriously. I always check to make sure I know where the exits are, and that I know what kind of flotation devices there are (under seat, seat cushion, etc), and that is it. I know the drill on the oxygen masks and what not. Frankly I think even checking the flotation device is a waste of time since most water landings = massive casualties.

    @haguenite: Well, like I said, that's why I actually pay attention to that part. I figure it's good to know. But oxygen mask/here's how you put on a seatbelt/pay attention when we tell you to keep your damn butt in the seat, those things I know pretty well.
