So when did LA Times turn into Tiger Beat?

I suppose no real journalists work there anymore?

Wow, does LA Time have a Girls' Guide to the Internet so I can learn about diet blogs and fingernail painting tips sites too?

    *gag*

I have a feeling my comic book collection would put most of the writing staff of LA Times to shame. Hey LA Times, way to miss the mark on who reads comics and why, YET AGAIN.

this reminds me of that Life magazine article in the 1960's that straight said that an upcoming feminist march would have a lot of "great skirt-watching" - about 30 years later they called themselves out for it and apologized.

On top of the fact that I ALWAYS want to do the laundry of just about ANY man, here are a couple choice excerpts from the AMAZING article:

"Bonus: Benicio del Toro's natural wolf-y looks won't even require hair and makeup for the panel." What? We're not just there to ogle men, we're there to ogle really hairy men.

"Girls that can kill you with a quick chop to the throat should always be applauded." Oh yes, that's a wonderful quality in any person; when I look for someone to make out with, I like to make sure they can do ultimate damage to everyone.

Aw, this makes me sad. I wish I were a devoted enough fan of Buffy/Red Dwarf/etc to go to one of these events. I might not be hardcore enough for them. Are casual-to-strong fans welcome at these things?

@Fridge Hussy : Candy-Coated Unicorns Are Quite Hard To Find: I love PAX because Tycho and Gabe do it right. The passes are priced reasonably. Like 3 days for 40 bucks or something. But they have gaming lounges too with power strips and huge bean bags to sit on. You can check out video games too and play. Its amazing. I highly recommend going. Oh and next year (I think?) there will be an East Coast PAX too. Tycho and Gabe are so nice. They signed my DS.

I went to Comic Con a few years ago, and I can tell you, no one was going to press conferences based on the looks. When we went to a Q & A, it was because we were interested in the work. Also, I find the nerds dressed up as Luke Skywalker 100x sexier than the celebrities (they're so short in person!).

@HuckleberryFriend: A friend of a a friend explained that "there aren't comic books any more; they're graphic novels now!" and then asked if she could borrow my (first edition) Sandman collection. I told her that she could if she was willing to admit that they were comics (as per Neil Gaiman's definition of "graphic novel"). They are still safely in my possession.

As someone who'd enjoy the hell out of Comic-Con I really don't like being condescended to in this manner, LA Times. This article is doubly silly because the official line-up isn't released yet.

But I also want to go to Comic-Con and convince Colin Ferguson to marry me. so. there is that.

Who ever wrote that article must not have been to a Comic Con. MOST Comic Cons do not have major mainstream stars. They have nerd heros like Seth Green and Joss Whedon.

@Dodgergirl: Over the years at the Comic Con in San Diego I have met or watched panels with Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortenson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nicholas Cage, Quentin Tarantino, Darryl Hannah, Jessica Alba and Kate Beckinsale in addition to Josh Whedon, Seth Green, Kevin Smith and Wil Wheaton.

The entire gamut of of Hollywood celebrity is there every year promoting their films and television shows.

@collegelemur: I went to the San Diego (comic) and LA cons (pinup, scifi/horror, comic) in the 90's and can testify to this. The more recent SD Comicon has had a lot more celebs, though, realizing that the event has exploded into a serious press junket that rivals Sundance.

@ShadowWylde: You know, I framed my response wrong. It's not that I necessarily think A-listers don't go to Comic-Con-- they clearly do-- but that you have to have a certain relationship with your fame and your fans. And I don't think the Angelina and Brad of today-- who are both two people specifically mentioned in the article-- really have that relationship.
