OH MY GOD. I was JUST on RetroJunk.com watching the old Skip It and MicroMachines commercials.

The old Tootsie-Roll Pop ads are the best. "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop? Well, let's find out: A-one! A-two-oo! A-three. *CHOMP* A-three."

I also know the entire Tootsie Roll jingle by heart.

@stoprobbers: Aa, my friends and I SO brought our Skip Its to school for joint sessions during recess!! I even remember doing a pretend commercial about how jump ropes were whack and Skip Its were the toy of TODAY.

In the midst of life, we are in death ...

As someone who's currently rehearsing Mozart's Requiem I know have Agnus Dei stuck in my head. This is not bad though since it may be my favorite Requiem.

Also, now I would like to watch Amadeus.

Bring back David the Gnome and then we can talk.

Also, the only thing nostalgia has led me to buy is Old School Nintendo games which are now available for the Wii (because let's face it, those are just FUN).

This is a recurring topic of conversation between me and the boy: our mutual infatuation with David the Gnome.

The "return to simpler times" things bug me (for reason stated in the post). It is like saying"we live in scary times." When did we not live in scary times? Before Islamofascism (or whatever we call it these days), we were scared by communism, and before communism, we scared by fascism, and so on.

Does anyone actually buy things because of nostalgia? I'll go to Target, freak out about seeing Shrinkydinks, put the box back on the shelf, and only purchase the Lysol I came in for. It seems like too obvious a gimmick to actually work.

I really miss the bad commercial jingles that tried to be cool for kids.

"Hey there, kids, won't you check it out? It's a super awesome breakfast and there is no doubt! You can eat it fast, you can eat it slow! It's super rad and tastes like Super Mario!"

I just made that up, but you get the idea.

@hortense: I can sing the Frosted Flakes commercials that played in the 90s (maybe earlier, I can only remember the 90s and beyond) and have embedded themselves in my brain. Dedicated to Hortense:

"Hey Tony. I like the things you do. Hey TONY! If I could, I would be you! You're the one and only tiger, with the one and only taste. You know how to take a breakfast and make it GRRRRREAT. Frosted Flakes are more than good! They're GRRRRREAT!"

Words may be off. I was young and this occupied my brain while I waited for Animaniacs. You're welcome.

The idea of nostalgia (warm & fuzzy, pre-9/11 feelings) in bad economic and social times isn't particularly new for advertising.

But what it boils down to is that they don't have to fork out extra money for anything that goes along with a new campaign: photo shoots, talent, extensive production, editing, creative, etc.

They can tell them, "Pick up the Tootsie Roll owl and run him in this, this, and this spot."

It makes people go, "Awwww, I remember that commercial!" and subsequently pick up 3 or 4 Tootsie pops next time they run into the corner store.

I do have to say, though, that I like the Pepsi washed-out, one-word billboards. "SOWEET!" is my fav. :-)
