Part of me is exasperated at all the very young, white, privileged fashion bloggers that have risen to fame (Cory Kennedy is the obvious, but also Alexi Wasser from imboycrazy.com, and I know there are others whose names/URLs I cannot recall), so am kind of meh about hearing news about Tavi Gevinson.
That said, having just read her blog, she comes across as wide-eyed and adorable- reading her reaction over meeting Chloë Sevigny and not meeting Hedi Slimane, she seems as much an excitable fourteen year old as anyone, privilege and extraordinary circumstances notwithstanding, I guess.
@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: What is her privilege, exactly? I've been wondering for a while how she gets her hands on such extraordinary clothing at such a young age. Are her parents in the fashion world?
"1,500 girls lined up on Saturday in New York, and another 1,000 in Los Angeles, to try to be chosen as America's representative to the Ford agency's Supermodel of the World competition"
Haven't they been running that competition for a while now? Like, pre-ANTM days?
@femme-bot: Oh, SMOW's been around forever. But I don't think they held cast-of-thousands ANTM-style free-for-alls on selection day. That is pure reality TV.
We're having a nasty ice storm this morning. Mr. G couldn't get to work because the major highway he takes there was closed completely. Any travel for shopping is completely out today, but I did get a fantastic on-line deal on 4 wardrobe pieces that I really do need for work right now. 100 bucks, including shipping - and the original cost of the dress pants was more than that!
The best part of all this is I don't have to drive anywhere. I totally love internet shopping. What can beat having the retailers send the shit directly to you?
@Gretchen:I hardly ever shop in stores anymore, unless I am home in NY because there it is just too tempting and easy to pop into stores while walking around. Normally, it is all online for me, Ebay in particular.
Pray tell, where did you get these 4 wardrobe pieces for 100 bucks???!!
@SurrealKiller: Eh, I don't care about her one way or another, and I don't find her terribly interesting, but she's still one of the most successful supermoddles ever.
Does she "deserve" to be famous? I haven't the slightest idea, but she's still prestigious and probably will be for a long time. So she keeps showing up in the spotlight. Meh.
@SurrealKiller: She's beautiful, she shags rock stars, she's the most famous - some would say, iconic - model in the world, her private life seems to consist of partying, taking drugs and drinking in the world's most glamorous locations - all of which she very rarely talks about. She is a taste-maker, whether you like it or not; people want to know what she wears, what clubs/bars she goes to, hotels she stays at, where she lives, where she vacations. Given the number of newspaper stories about her this year, I'd say she's far from "old news".
@SurrealKiller: PS. I don't particularly like her for any of the things in my previous comment, btw. But what I do love is that she genuinely does not appear to give a fuck what anyone else thinks about her lifestyle or choices, which - given the amount of media exposure - is extremely kick-ass. She sailed through the whole cocaine scandal with such aplomb, and went on to even more success in her career - I can't help but admire her for her tenacity, strength and balls, frankly.
Oh, and I hate it when people are written off as 'old news' or 'irrelevant'. Just sayin.
I fully intend to take advantage of Old Navy's 60% off sale. There's hardly anyone out shopping right now. Also, Demarchelier cannot be read in a voice that isn't Meryl Streep's now.
(I actually know very little about the Dr. Who oeuvre. My boyfriend just told me about the celery-bestalked Doctor, though, and I thought it was too cool.)
this photo just totally brought out the geek in me. Check this out, if you want, it's a little clip from a charity program. It shows the new doctor(hot hot hot) and an older doctor ((Peter Davison, the dude in your photo)
Norma Kamali got in a big fight with the ILGWU back in the day when she refused to hire union-represented sewers. I'm betting all the Wal-Mat stuff does not have the union label, unless there's a CLGWU now and I doubt it.

ETA: apparently her dad is a 'high-school teacher,' but no comment on what her mum does.

She's still around because she's an exceptional model. Period.
