I...don't really like the Wizard of Oz. I find Dorothy to be excruciatingly obnoxious, which sort of ruins the movie, you know? On the other hand, I love Wicked. Creepy, messed up Gregory Maguire books (and their bizzrarely unrelated but awesome stage versions) ftw.

I just love how this child's movie has a coroner who comes out and sings about he's examined the corpse and how she's dead! DEAD!

I have always had a dark and sick sense of humor.

I tried watching Tin Man, but thought it was really boring, and Zooey's monotone voice grated after a while.

"Brand New Day" and "Home" are the standouts for The Wiz for me. I liked the movie as a kid, but watched it as an adult and thought it was cheesy.

Did anyone watch that SciFi channel Wizard of Oz thing last summer? I watched it because of my crush on Zooey Deschanel, and kind of ended up thinking it was really cool.

The Wiz...not so much. When all the graffiti comes to life! Ack! I cried when I saw it as a child.

As DaniFae just reminded me, Tinman. It was pretty cool, and Zooey is a pretty good Dorothy. :)

Cast stones if you will, but I actually think I like the experience of watching The Wiz more. Sure The Wizard of Oz was "better" (that pesky "quality" thing), but I remember more often than not being BORED TO TEARS when no one was singing during the original. Judge me if you will, but I haven't felt the need to watch it again since I was very young.

@andonthatnote: I watched it once in 5th grade and thought it was ok. Then I watched it about 15 years later and fell in love with it. I am definitely more of a Wizard of Oz fan now than I was when I was a kid. But of course there's no obligation to love it. I guess The Wizard of Oz is the kind of movie where if you say you are "meh" about it, people always say WHAT?? You don't lovvvve it?? and such.

This is why if it comes up in conversation I usually just keep my mouth shut. People get straight up fanatical about it.

@katie.scarlett.o'hara: If the flying monkeys scared you in the original, never watch Return to Oz....it had these creatures called Wheelers, which were basically like the monkeys, only they had wheels instead of hands and feet. It was incredibly creepy.

@katie.scarlett.o'hara: My baby sister (who is now 9) watched it with me a few years ago, and covered her eyes at those bits.

She then also embarassed the hell out of me in Sears by stage whispering "VANESSA LOOK, IT'S AN OOMPA LOOMPA" when she saw a dwarf near us. He was not impressed, but I did get to have an educational discussion with my sister, so I guess it was almost a win?

The Wizard Of Oz is in my Top 10 best films of all time. There are so many elements that can make or break a movie, and they all came together in this one film: classical mythic structure, great casting, acting, brilliant singing and choreography, direction, costumes, production design, editing.

But, despite all that, it is way more than the sum of it's parts - there is something indefinable about its profundity. It is true movie magic, and we all know it when we see it.
