Showing my undies in the office would be sure to get me booted. Not to mention once they see that I hired someone to refill my Subway cup with Vodka.

Honestly, I think it's the media oversaturation that is taxing my sympathy. We keep hearing over and over again how Amy has been on a fabulous tropical getaway forEVER and she lives a life of beach-side leisure with her MILLIONS!1!!1omg. Probably, if Amy wanted to, she could afford to live in a luxurious rehab facility for the rest of her life, or she could afford to live in a fabulous beach house in the most exclusive tropical hotspots and drink beer and get high for the rest of her life. And it makes me dismissive, even though I shouldn't be, because addiction sucks whether you're rich or poor. But all I can think of is people with mental health / addiction problems who DON'T have that kind of agency or resources, who can't get treatment and can't pull away from their demons.
I think the media is doing us ALL a disservice with its slavering tabloid coverage. (Not you, Jezebel, you're just reporting on the stuff that's in the media--you're not causing the shitstorm.) When you hear something repeated ad nauseum, your sensitivity to it gets kind of dulled after awhile, and addictions (as well as other mood imbalances/mental issues) are nothing to yawn at or scoff at or dismiss. But we get desensitized to it because OH LOL WHY DON'T THESE SILLY RICH PEOPLE GET HELP LOL!?!?111 And I shouldn't be so unsympathetic to her plight, but it's hard not to think about the resources she has that are beyond my imagining.

I still think it's true, so I'll just quote me!
"Of course we're all over such reports. We gossip and gape, and assure ourselves that we, at least, aren't that bad. We relish the fall of the mighty, as we warm to the occasional tale of redemption. Rock 'n' roll is a spectacle, and what more grandiose show is there than a raw descent into hell?
As lesser mortals, we also get some satisfaction: All that seedy indulgence may lead to creative genius - but at least the world doesn't know the results of my latest urine test.
Here's the thing, though: The drugs, as The Verve once sang, don't work."
I then went on to suggest that if Elvis and the Beatles had stayed clean, the world would have gotten more of their genius, and Lisa Marie would still have her dad. Which is better, all told.
I think that the desensitization/entertainment factor also winds up keeping other people from getting the help they need, but maybe I'm just hypersensitive. At any rate: Sigh.

i know, i know- oh poor amy! being RICH and living on the BEACH, life must be so TUFF but seriously. she's battling addiction, and has evidently just realized that her husband is an utter piece of shit. i also read that she was upset over being reminded of him by her songs. i just can't help but feel a certain amount of pity. the poor girl is heartbroken. let's all give her some time.

I don't know if the law is the same in England/St Lucia as it is in California, but she needs some kind of intervention. I know it's a common thought that addicts can't get clean unless they really truly want to (I accompanied my bff to NA for many years), but really in this case I think a non-optional rehab stay would be for the best. It makes me so sad to see anyone, let alone someone so young and talented, go down this route of self destruction. I have lost too many friends to drugs, I would not wish that kind of desperate loss on anyone.

Can I ask about the rationale of linking to this but not to, say, the Rihanna photos (the nude ones, and the police photos)? I understand that they are quite different on the face of it, but isn't the general intention not to gawk at vulnerable women?
