In the towns round here lots of shops give away old film plastic holdy things, the round ones about the size of a large coin? for people to put their butts out. Mainly to stop tourists throwing butts on the beach.

Good. What's really kooky about smoking there, though, is the way they're slowly going about banning it. There are sections of Tokyo (namely Shinjuku and Chiyoda wards) where you can't smoke on the street. Smoking outside has been banned wholesale in Osaka. They may have since amended that, but what a step to take! You can still smoke in restaurants, though. Cafes, bars, anyplace like that is kosher. Hotel rooms are OK too. You get a little ashtray by your bed. Cigarette vending machines? You bet. Cheap smokes, too. In the no-smoking areas, people have opened up little smoking parlors that you can just walk into and do your thing.

I totally make it a point to pretend it's the 70s and smoke in restaurants when I go to Japan. It's fun.

@Mrs. Jones: not really "good" for any tobacco company - given they have been sued over and over (mostly frivolous lawsuits) and all that money goes towards many un-related research projects across the country AND further, the taxes on the cigarettes are 1) outrageous 2) take money from the poor and 3) are more than any profit the tobacco companies make

I'd rather see the lawsuit money and taxes go towards "nicotine stamps" - which would be like food stamps - you could buy ONE pack of cigs or TEN packs of nick patches/gum so that those who want to quit could do so inexpensively

*for the record, I'm a non-smoker but I don't believe it my right to tell anyone not to smoke

**smoking is quite a bit less damaging (on many levels) than drinking and yet you'd be hard pressed to paint people who drink as villainous as smokers ... think about it

I hate hate hate that the streets and just about everywhere else are covered in cigarette butts. How hard is it to throw one out in a trash can? At my college, there would be piles upon piles AROUND the special stands they had for tossing them. Seriously.

I just do like David Sedaris and put the extinguished butt in the cuff of my trou. A drawback to my method is that I forget sometimes. Butts in the laundry is no good. I'll be standing in line at the store and notice that the persons in my immediate vicinity will start looking around sniffing, trying to locate the source of the dryer-sheets mixed with warm, brown filter smell. Yeah, it's me.

My favorite bizarre Japanese product is a cup men (i guess women, too, but it's marketed for men) can pee into that has a chemical inside that turns urine to gel for handy disposal. Where are the supposed to pee into this? The subway?

Personal, pocket/purse sized ashtrays have been around since the cigarette holder. The one's from the 30's and 40's and such are so much prettier.

@lurkystars: they have ash-trays in cars but yet the person in front of me on the highway (at night) always has to toss the butts out of the car and then i have a momentary freak-out while there are sparks flying at my face

@shewar: I have these neighbors in the next building over who are always having big, obnoxious barbecues during the summer (not even in the yard of their own building, on the grass in between the sidewalk and the street, which is super tacky and disruptive). They always litter all over the place and never bother to pick it up the next day. In Chicago, you can dial 311 for non-emergencies (like you notice a broken fire hydrant or a car is blocking your driveway or something) and I call the city on my neighbors at least once a week for their messiness. I'm such a crabby old lady.

@shewar: Seriously, I find it troubling that I see less and less garbage cans around the city. I understand better why people litter when I walk for ten blocks holding onto a sticky piece of garbage because I can't see a receptacle anywhere.

I come from a small family, but one of my friends is from Südtirol (North Italy, formerly Austria) and a family reunion involves hundreds of people. I was also a little squicked out when we walked through several villages and she kept pointing to this or that house and said, "OH, they're related to us, too!"
