I found a wallet in Key Food in Brooklyn last weekend, stuffed with cash, and a medicare card. I walked to the front of the store and saw a older gentleman in his 80's looking befuddled at the cashier searching for his wallet. The look on his face when I handed it to him was PRICELESS!!

as amazing as classy's promise is to her sister and her brother even with her advancing age, it is not even remotely close to a reality for most people to be able to take care of their loved ones in their homes full time who have alzheimers and dementia, regardless of their age.

with most memory care facilities being private pay agencies ONLY and not even accepting medicare or medicaid and a rapidly aging population and no surgeries or treatment for alzheimer's/dementia that is more than palliative, it's only going to get worse.

Sadie, of all the authors here, I find your voice to be the most distinct. I'd have known this was you in a heartbeat w/out your byline.

In other non-fangirl news, I've found that for me, it's generally just easier to be nice to people than not. (And I have some weird thing where I *love* to make people laugh unexpectedly.)

@labeled: You know, you're right about it being easier to be nice to people. I wish I could take that advice and act on it. My boyfriend goes through life almost never taking out his frustration or bad mood on others. I've always admired that about him. One of the things I love most about him is his kindness and his ability to befriend strangers. He makes lasting friendships with the guy at the deli, the UPS man, the postal worker. I just love that.

@BlackFrancine: I mean, it does help that I live in a friendly part of the world anyway, but yeah, for me, it just takes more energy to put up the shield.

And to this day I will occasionally run into our old Fedex & UPS drivers, which results in hugs and discussions over how everyone's kids are doing. LOL

I used to work at a grocery store in a very economically depressed area in North Carolina (which is REALLY economically depressed right now) and last year at the height of the recession, on two different occasions I had three different customers help other people buy groceries. That always made me happy all day when it happened. It also made me a lot friendlier in stores, to the point that I started randomly complementing people in Target if I liked their coat.

@MissSkittles is not your kind of lady: I am a big fan of this during the holidays - I'm that random chick that will, if I'm in a drive-thru line, pay for the car behind me. (Note - this can be a pita if you use a credit or debit card, it's easier to do w/cash.)

I need to do it more the rest of the year, because I love it.

@Maritsa: Also, the human will can be an amazing thing. To stay alive to 104 and to die only a few months after she kept her promise - that's astonishing.

(Also, I am in no way suggesting that people who died didn't have the will to live. My dad wanted to live more than anything, but died of cancer anyway. And my godmother who wanted to make it so she could take care of her daughter with Down's Syndrom didn't. Just saying that sometimes it seems like it makes a difference.)

It's easy, especially in NYC, to harbor negative thoughts to any stranger on the street. I find my days/general mood is better if I smile, and even respond to a random hello. It's good to receive reminders that being a good person benefits far more than just you.

What wonderful stories! I hope that Classy really does rest in peace...I think she's earned it.

I love hearing people's feel good stories of good deeds they've done or seen. Since I'm a bit agoraphobic, I don't often have the chance to touch other people in a positive way, but I do try. My mother always made it a point to let people go ahead of her in line at the store when they only have a few items, and I try to do that.

If Classy could be so strong at her age, I'll definitely try to step it up a bit!

I heard this this morning and it made my day. I was so happy they devoted time to the story.

Yesterday I hit a parked car and left a note. The owner called me a few hours later, and it turned out to be the guy who ran the deli I'd just eaten at. He told me not to worry about it and that he hoped I'd enjoyed my lunch. Some days I love people.

Sadie, what a lovely post. Both stories point to the importance of simply being kind, smiling, patience and generally trying to be a good person. Nothing puts me in a better mood than when I have or see a positive encounter such as yours. I am not a softie by any means, but it gives me the warm fuzzies.
