I had no idea TopShop didn't carry larger sizes everywhere. They didn't have them at the Russian TopShops I shopped at, but no Russian store for young trendy people carries larger sizes. It seems that they're cutting out a high percentage of their potential clientele in the US and UK.

Ladies

I FUCKING LIVE for TopShop.

I've been waiting 5 years for the State side version.

FTW, they open NOW in the middle of my wallet's winter of discontent.

I've spent a bit of time in London and this place & Neal's Yard were always on the hit list.

I know hype keeps places open - but can we keep the tourist away, up at Forever 21 perhaps??

I think the sizing, crowding, and prices would scare the bejeezus out of me. Last time I fit into a US10, I was hungry all the time and I could see all my ribs. To brave a horde of seething, sweating bodies and pay Banana Republic prices for H&M quality? It sounds absolutely fucking horrifying.

Apologies to those who love TopShop. It doesn't sound like it is for me.

This is SO strange to me. In England Topshop is seen by the fashion conscious as quite passe. Good for the sales to get a few dresses but in general way overpriced for what they are selling!

I'm sat in a cafe at 6th and W 14th right now and am considering going to laugh and point at the people in line.

Really, no self respecting hipster in London would be seen in recognizable Topshop clothes, let alone standing in line to buy them.

@CocoBambi: I would disagree. I know quite a few self respecting hipsters in London, and between Topshop and Urban Outfitters they've kitted themselves out quite nicely. I would agree that there isn't the same kind of frenzy, but Topshop certainly does not want for fashionable customers.

@R-Star: Yeah--I think quite a lot of very fashionable people shop at TopShop. There were huge queues in London the day the first Kate Moss collection came out, for example. I mean, I'm not the biggest fashionista around (grad student...), but I have a few friends who work at fashion mags and they make regular pilgrimages to TopShop Oxford street to get some pieces.

@Philippa Snoulton: How wealthy? It ranges between living in squats and living off of Eton Square. The last place I personally hung out in London was at the Old Blue Last...

I just meant, the people I know would get the above mentioned 'mom jeans' from vintage stores or American Apparel, Opening Ceremony etc before looking in Topshop.

To me and people I know (perhaps we are indeed in the large minority of Londoners) Topshop has that chain store, franchise taint, and I would rather not support Phillip Green and the Arcadia group anyway, for ethical as well as sartorial reasons.

@CocoBambi: Well, I'm not really sure how you could argue that you'd more happily shop at American Apparel to avoid that 'chain store, franchise taint' that infects Topshop. Regardless, this attitude is exactly what irritates me about fashion. There is nothing wrong with making fashion accessible. One of my favourite things about living in the UK is that women here take risks with their clothing, so someone can go into Topshop and buy something basic or something outrageous, and match it with something they bought at Primark, a thrift store, or Marc Jacobs and that's fine. To argue that no self-respecting hipster (as though that's the opinion that really matters) would dare to be seen in Topshop is to argue that fashion only belongs to some elite group who decide when something is acceptable and then when it's not.

You know who is cool? Noel Fielding. Because he will shimmy himself into the tiniest of jeans, work his hipster cred, and then he'll laugh at himself. A sense of humour is a good thing, and pointing and mocking people who are excited that something they perceive as fashionable has become readily available to them is elitist and unnecessary.

I just got back from there. My friends and I got on line at about9am(What? Don't judge me.), there were about 60-70 people in front of us at that time. Inside there was a bit of madness(unless you were in the TopMen section), so I took the time to mostly browse purchasing only a pair of shoes.

Also, If you have more than one gift card, Tatiana, they will let you combine them. And if you are a student you get 10% when you show your student ID.

@TheUptightMidwesterner hasn't smoked in 48 days but is stil...: It would be a US 12, UK 16...jeans go up to 34 waist, but they can be tough to find. I think some of their clothes tend to run a bit small, as well. If their sizes don't work for you, though, they do have a great selection of accessories and shoes. I have a love/hate relationship with Topshop, as more than half of my wardrobe is comprised of their clothes, but the quality is often insufficient given the price.

@tscheese: Not everything runs small. I'm between sizes (UK 12 or UK 14) and sometimes I find a 12 that fits perfectly, sometimes they're way too small. They also do specific petite and tall lines; it's actually the only place I can buy jeans because I need a 36-inch inseam.

I feel you on the love/hate. Easily three-quarters of my clothes are from there, yet I'm always rolling my eyes when I walk in. And having said that I can't stay away..

Oh also, I don't know if the NY store does it, but STUDENT DISCOUNT... At least that takes the edge off the price.

I wear the super-skinny fit, and while I'm normally a UK 6-8, I take a UK 10 in them. Similarly, although they claim to go up to a 16, a friend of mine who is a 14 has never been able to wear their jeans, in any style.

@Philippa Snoulton: Really? I'm a 14 and I wear their Baxter jeans like there's no tomorrow (the skinny but not uber-skinny ones)--I have them in like three colours. Maybe they sell them in bigger waist sizes for the tall section? I did have to order them online, they only sold W28L36 ones in the shop, as if people who are 5'10" are all model sized (pssshhh).

I do not get the Top Shop hype. $80 jeans and $60 tops are not great deals. UK sizing is short and has a small range. I'm sure I'll stop in eventually, but I'm not waiting on line.

For any Americans obsessed with Top Shop, their website is offering free shipping this week.

@HollyGodrunkly: To a certain extent, you're right in regards to the runway copy thing, but the prices have gone up quite a bit in the last few years. Topshop can require a discerning eye. You see wet-look leggings and an oversized fluorescent top in a sea of fashionable girls wearing outrageous outfits and you think, 'Yeah, I could do this.' And then you get home and try everything on and you're like, 'No, no, I can't do this.' Topshop has got me close to thinking that jumpsuits are acceptable, but luckily I've mastered the art of leaving just as I'm about to lose all my common sense.

@HollyGodrunkly: It is kind of the UK Forever 21 with bigger names like Kate Moss attached. UK clothing is more expensive overall.

@counterclockwise is such a geeky nerd: The US is in many ways, cheap. I just checked and full price jeans at the Gap are $50. You could pick up an ever cheaper pair at Target for $15-25. This is why the Euros always stock up when they visit.

Part of the difference is tax. US sales tax is much lower than the VATs in Europe, its usually under 10% and many areas have no sales tax on clothes.

@clevernamehere: I think Topshop is very overrated. When I go to the UK I can never find anything at that store that I like that is of any quality or at a decent price. Last time I went, Kate Moss' line had just debuted there... lineups stretched around the block and they were only letting a few girls in at a time. When I got in, all I saw were girls going crazy over plain looking clothes that looked poorly made and could've gotten at H & M for half the price. It was mass hysteria over nothing.

This is coming from a woman who LOVES to shop and buy fad clothing. I'll go to H&M, Zara and Mango instead, thanks.

Heard a story this morning on BBC America where a rep was bragging that their jeans only cost around one hundred while we silly Americans paid several hundred for ours so the shop would obviously be a success.

I was screaming about Marshalls, Levis and under $20 the entire time.

@sybann: This lady is delusional. I live in the UK, and Topshop jeans are £40-£45, about $57-$65. Topshop jeans are FAR from $100. Maybe the Kate Moss collection ones are more? I do know they are charging prices in the US which will be A LOT higher than their UK prices.
