I don't understand the Susan Boyle craze. As a Brit, I checked out the video on YouTube at my dad's behest when he called to tell me about it and thought she was covering up a snippy, nasty personality with faux sassiness.

I'm about as interested in reading about her as I am about Heidi Montag, to be honest.

@GoodBadNotEvil: @ihateemo: to be fair her personality, pleasant or otherwise, is sort of irrelevant given it's supposed to be about whether she can sing or not. As to the latter I don't know whether she's talented as i am on my high horse regarding reality shows and won't watch them.

But I do think that there are issues surrounding her ability to cope and mental health issues deriving from the fact that she was deprived of oxygen at birth which might raise questions about how the press/internet etc have treated her. There was a good piece in the Observer this Sunday about it.

@GoodBadNotEvil: I find it hard to pity anyone who puts themselves out there to the public and then suddenly has a moment of realisation that goes along the lines of "oh FUCK!", especially since if she wanted to she could fuck off out of the limelight, go back to Scotland and enjoy being the weird deference that local celebrities attract.

But she's not going to do that is she? Rather, she's going to milk it for all it's worth and make a sum of money that very few of us can comprehend regardless of how bad the press gets. Waaaaaaah, so sad.

@ihateemo: The fact is that she has documented learning disabilities and possibly other mental issues..which may have made it difficult for her to understand exactly what she was getting herself into.

Also, depression and other mental illnesses don't discriminate based on how much money a person has or how seemingly wonderful their life is. If a celebrity gets sick with cancer, say, they are still suffering the same as anyone else with the disease. Mental illness is no different.

@Wibbles: Friend's dad (English) was sent to boarding school at six. Met his best friend there. Both over 80 and still tight. Maybe it's a cultural thing?

It's fighting hunger. Since I haven't eaten in 32 years, it won't affect me.

That's pretty much the best quote ever. Especially since most current or former models would never admit (even in jest) that they had a less than sensible diet.

@kithkin: The lack of self-awareness is what gets me or the understanding that anyone could be different. My nephew for a while would come dancing out of his room with a blanket around his legs saying, "I'm a princess!" Well, it took about two times before the shocked and disapproving looks of his parents stopped that. But, hey, they didn't SAY anything. He's a boy, so he just wasn't into it. Right. It's just amazes me that people don't see how we shape the gender behavior of children right from day one.

I really feel for Ms. Boyle. She's suffering from some sort of mental health issues which have allowed her to collect public assistance for years. Don't the producers of the show screen for such things? The producers of the show are somewhat to blame here.

Yes, probably. I suspect that they value good television (read: ratings) over the mental health of their contestants. Look at the casting choices for almost any reality show and you can almost hear the thought process of the casting directors.
