They're completely right. We got our mixed terrier a few years before we moved from Maryland to New Jersey. The poor thing was neurotic mess the day we moved. She chewed through a big bone in one hour, she kept trying to hitch a ride with our furniture, and she wouldn't leave my mother's side. She seemed convinced that we were leaving her behind. Dogs do not do well with transitions. Best to adopt the wee thing once they're settled.

On another note, they should definitely get a dog from a shelter. We got our terrier from a shelter in Prince George's County (not that far from DC Obamas!). She's the most amazing little thing and the best part? We've had her for 16 years, she's 18 years old and she'll likely live for a few more years. Mixed breeds are the best.

Good on them. Moving dogs is the worst thing ever. Our old dog had to survive a Transatlantic flight because we moved to Germany, and our current pup will be moving to England with me this weekend. Thank God for cars.

@KiddyKat: Eh, not necessarily. My dad's family cat deserted them on moving day. She took one look at the moving van and walked away. They never saw her again.

@KiddyKat: I recently moved 2 miles away from my old house. My poor cat made the worst sound I've ever heard from a living being. He was absolutely terrified. I can't imagine how he would have handled a long drive or a flight. Poor kitty.

@KiddyKat: My mom moved my cats when I moved, bless her heart. She had to stop overnight at her house before heading on to my new place, and the next day she had to coax one of the cats out with milk, but the other would not come out. It would just hiss, so she had to wait for its mood to improve. Then my girl kitty hid in one of the truck compartments, briefly scaring my mom into thinking she had jumped out the window or something.

How much do I love them for this?! So kind, so responsible, thinking about things like a wee puppy's needs while also attempting to save the economy and end the war in Iraq. And cutting a deal with the girls! Actually, you know, talking with your children beforehand about their lives and helping them manage their expectations!

I love these people waaaaaay more than a grown woman should love complete strangers. Lord, I am such a freak.

I kinda figured they wouldn't get the dog until they moved in anyway. If you get a dog and move a few months later you're just asking for potty problems.
