When discussing the tape(s) on the View she said "Christians aren't perfect" and boy, oh boy, is that true. But that seems to be the go-to line for moralistic evangelicals AFTER they've been exposed for sexual hypocrisy. before that, they herald themselves as the saviors of morality and family values. If the evangelical movement would embrace their own sexuality, things like this wouldn't have to discredit them. but for some reason they maintain that honest and open attitudes towards human sexuality is incompatible with family values.

I don't think that's fair. One can support waiting for sex until marriage (the viewpoint most associated with evangelicals) and still be honest about and unafraid of sex.

In an article on this topic, an evangelical pastor named Wirth talked about the book of the Bible called Song of Songs, which is quite sexual and beautiful, and then said, "I don't think sex was created in the back alleys of the porn industry. I really think God is the one who designed it and it's a beautiful thing and God wants us to enjoy it."

@sheislingling: but they aren't just advocating for pre-marital abstinence among evangelicals (which there is absolutely nothing wrong with), but try to impose their values on a secular culture through legislative and media campaigns (such as abstinence only education or focus on the family boycotts of "immoral" culture). for evangelicals, the "cleaning up" of secular culture is a part of the agenda/platform in the name of family values (which is political) and god (which is religious). when i say they should embrace their own sexuality i mean not only should they admit that not only do they not have a monopoly on the creation of values, but that sometimes they do not even measure up to the high standards they seek to set for the whole of society. us secular folks do feel a little twinge of self-satisfaction when a moralist is exposed for sexual hypocrisy because its an indirect admittance that sexual "morality" isn't as black and white as many evangelicals would want you to believe.

and im familiar with the song of songs. but im sure that pastor only finds certain types of sexual relationships in certain contexts to be beautiful, ie. monogamous, heterosexual sex within the confines of marriage.

@KATE!: all true. remember, though, that secular culture isn't devoid of value judgments. we (myself included) often speak of evangelical advocacy as an imposition on an otherwise largely morally neutral culture in which (were it not for ideological encroachments) we'd all be free to make up our own minds about things like sex. it's a myth to say that a culture with totally privatized religion isn't imposing a set of values.

i don't mean to say that anyone's totally right here- i'm just trying to add some nuance to the way we view evangelical culture.

My issue with Prejean, beyond the homophobia, is that like Britney and the ilk before her, she set herself up for the fall in the first place. She went on a media firestorm attacking other people's so-called immorality knowing full well that those tapes existed and could be released to damage her. Do I think it's right that the only purpose those tapes are serving is to damage her? No, because I hate the fact that sex tapes only serve to damage the women in them, not the men. But at the same time she considered herself someone who had to the right to pass judgment on the sex lives of others when she knew full well that she had no right to.

As for the comparison to Ensign, Sanford, Gingrich--I don't give a fuck if they want to be adulterers with loose morals. I've never cared about the philandering of politicians. What do I care is that they not act like paragons of good values and morals when they're not. I do care when they think they have the right to judge others when they are truly no better, and often times, infinitely worse.

However, regarding your point that "sex tapes only serve to damage the women in them, not the men" I would like to point out that the tapes seem to be (from reports, I have not seen them) tapes she made of herself and sent to him. I don't think he was in them or involved in their production, so it shouldn't really be something that damages him.

I actually think she DID do something wrong: She set herself up as a paragon of virtue who had a right to judge the private sex lives of other adults and rule on their morality, using just her Manichean view of the world. "You are bad because you have gay sex. I am good because I don't." Hell, she even said she was proud not to have any gay friends.

But the adage about glass houses and stones isn't an adage for nothing. When you judge so fiercely and loudly, then you better make damn sure you're not just a hypocrite with an agenda and a book to shill. 'Cause you make yourself plenty of enemies with plenty of daggers. And you will reap what you sow.

But karma is a bitch. The thing is, it's biting her in the ass now. The tape doesn't need to be released--merely the presence of the tape is enough to identify her as a hypocrite. So I hope it never gets released.
