@Colonel Dubby: We just sing the anthem in my country. None of this looking at the flag, hand over our heart, flag pin bullshit. No wonder Bellah had a field day with his civil religion theory in America!
Oh, thank Christ I'm not the only one who pronounces it Missour-EE. I was having a embarrassed moment there. I have a profound paranoia that I'm always saying things incorrectly. It's the indelible mark of someone who spends her time in the company of books.
But I do say Pah-kistan and Irahn, and nothing you can say will convince me that that's wrong. La la la la!
My husband's submarine is called the Missouri, and at the keel-laying we were informed from now on everyone had to say "Missour-ah" or the state would be mad at us. My opinion is a state with no coastline shouldn't get a say in what you call a submarine, but what do I know?
@Devonna: My mother says "warsh" and she's from Oregon (although she went to grad school at Mizzou)! It's drives me nuts. It especially sucked when we lived in Washington, DC.
Mizuruh? Really? I had no idea. I think I'm gonna stick with that -ee.
One of the students I tutor has to defend McCain's healthcare ideas during an election debate at her school tomorrow. It will be attended by the local media and some politicians. I think this is cruel and unusual punishment.
I'm so glad that Steve Bell has started drawing her now, because that bee-hive is just going to get bigger and bear less and less relation to the shape of her actual head. And he will be able to document her transformation into Amy Winehouse.

In Mexico, if you don't play the national anthem exactly as written or give a poor performance, you get a fine since it is considered disrespectful.

But that was enough off-topicness.
