    In Mexico, if you don't play the national anthem exactly as written or give a poor performance, you get a fine since it is considered disrespectful.

    Oh, thank Christ I'm not the only one who pronounces it Missour-EE. I was having a embarrassed moment there. I have a profound paranoia that I'm always saying things incorrectly. It's the indelible mark of someone who spends her time in the company of books.


    But I do say Pah-kistan and Irahn, and nothing you can say will convince me that that's wrong. La la la la!

    My husband's submarine is called the Missouri, and at the keel-laying we were informed from now on everyone had to say "Missour-ah" or the state would be mad at us. My opinion is a state with no coastline shouldn't get a say in what you call a submarine, but what do I know?

    My St. Louis-based relatives all say 'Missouri'. I have acquaintances in Jeff City that say 'Missour-ah'. However, they all say 'warsh.'


    Which makes my sinuses ache.

    Mizuruh? Really? I had no idea. I think I'm gonna stick with that -ee.


    One of the students I tutor has to defend McCain's healthcare ideas during an election debate at her school tomorrow. It will be attended by the local media and some politicians. I think this is cruel and unusual punishment.
