If your attitude towards sexual harassment is "[your country's] men always respect [your country's] women," then you really should not be the leader of that country's National Council for Women.

I don't care which country you apply it to, it's just a stupid thing to say.

@Katxyz: That the burqa is: "a sign of the subjugation, of the submission of women." I commented a lot in the post about it yesterday: [jezebel.com]

I know, but how does one prove the other? I've been catcalled in jeans and a t-shirt and while jogging. Are those now signs of by subjugation?

@Katxyz: If you know, then why did you ask? I'm not getting into it all over again so soon after yesterday - all my opinions are in that post, along with a link to an article that answers your question above.

Such harassment contrasts with emerging signs of female political advancement in Egypt and other countries across the Middle East.

Actually it would make sense that female advancement would lead to more harassment particularly if the patriarchal structure is threatened or forced to adapt. Those who are not happy with these changes may harass (in this case public verbal insults, groping and even rape) to assert authority/dominance or express their frustration with the changes that are taking place.

Ugh. I have a (former) friend going to Egypt in a few months for vacation and she REFUSES to believe that this will be a problem. Perhaps she should join the Egyptian National Council for Women.

@CherriSpryte: According to my friend (from my comment above), if she can learn to yell "Get your hands off me!" in fluent Arabic, it will be a big help.

@queenjulie: You should learn to say that in any language when you are in a foreign country. I believe that men in other countries always see American women as over-sexed and hate our freedom and power. I had to learn it in Italy. Italian men thought that it was appropriate to grab me constantly in public. I found that elbowing them in the side and yelling, "Don't touch me, you bastard!" worked pretty damn well.

. . . which proves that covering up does not prevent a woman from being perceived as a sexual object by men. In fact, the contrary appears to be true.
