You're an adult? You can do anything you want with your hoo-ha. I don't give a shit as long as it's consensual.
However, I'm getting quite tired of people constantly saying " Oh I went into sex work because it's the only way I have to make money". NO. It's not the only fucking way, it's the one you chose.
My stepmom was able to raise her 4 siblings in a slum when they were orphaned without getting involved in drugs/guns/prostitution. In many places, there are plenty of options that don't required paid sex.
If you want to go into sex work, that's fine. If you enjoy it, much better. Just don't try to "justify it" with some cliched sob story.
She's a teenager, for fuck's sake. She should be obsessing about terrible music, checking out boys her own age and wearing ugly clothes, not selling her body to rich perverts.
Noooooooooooo, no one EVAR uses the morning-after pill as a premediated escape hatch for irresponsible sex choices...how DARE you slut-shame wimmins?!!
How is this any different from regular old prostitution, again? And prostitution is sad, no matter the situation, whether it's a woman on a streetcorner or some girl pimping out her own alleged virginity. On one hand, it's none of my business what anyone does with themselves. On the other, it just reminds me of the idea that a womans' virginity is still considered by some to be more valuable than anything else about her. Which in turn makes me feel pretty stabulous. Thanks, patriarchy, for reinforcing the idea that women are just holes. Also thanks to the women who buy into this idea.
as much as i am not into the idea of selling one's virginity, it is entirely this girl's right to. why she's doing this doesn't matter. it's her body, she has the right do do whatever she wants to it.
i just feel like this article is one huge value judgment that seems counter-intuitive to the concept that a woman has a right to choose to do what she wants with her body, a concept that i thought most jezebels were down with here.
i dunno, i'm probably not articulating myself properly, but what i'm trying to say is DURR I DISAGREE DURR.
@wedropscience: Why she's doing it does matter if she's doing it because she's being coerced into it. That was sort of my point. She went from a poor country where prostitution is illegal to one where it was legal, for no apparent reason and immediately began attempting to auction off her virginity with a doctor's certificate that she brought with her and, despite not having any money, got a second certificate to "prove" she's a virgin. Once she gets the money from a nice, respectful man that she might fall in love with, she's going home and giving it to her parents.
@wedropscience: You know, I hate the way "judgement" has become a bad word. Sometimes -- in fact, most of the time -- judgement is a very good thing. And this case is an exquisite example of the horror of not enough judgement being used. Unless this woman is completely lying about her intention to have unprotected sex with a john, or intends to take the money and run, she's behaving in an extremely self-destructive manner.
Nobody here is talking about passing a law to keep her from selling her virginity. In fact, nobody here has any power over this woman whatsoever. But I think questioning what is becoming a disturbing trend is a good, and productive thing to do. Women, like men, make dumb, destructive, and occasionally even evil choices. Saying that any choice a woman makes is great is not empowering or feminist.
I still have the ol' virginity. Maybe I could sell it off and pay for things. I like debt, you see, and have quite a bit of it.
Unfortunately for me, I am what the locals refer to as "well, you're not homely or anything", so this plan may not work quite as well.
That said, this is unsettling. I mean... no offense, but this doesn't seem like a well-thought-out decision. And it does seem a little like sex trafficking. Let's hope it's not. :(
No offense to genuinely needy Romanians but I think I've met this woman at my bus stop, holding a computer print out of a message asking for money. It's like the live version of Nigerian email scams.
How do they know that they're virgins? I mean, you can (kind of) prove a woman IS a virgin; but (outside of her having kids, or something) you can't prove a woman ISN'T a virgin. Right?
Except then it turns out she never graduated from high school - due, I'm sure in no small part, to the willingness of some of her former teachers to give interviews that she's a slut who has slept around a lot.
I don't really have a problem with this. Assuming she is the one that wants to sell her virginity, and she isn't being pressured to at all, why shouldn't she? We try not to judge sex workers on this site. I don't see how this is any different.
The fact that this girl is so delusional that she thinks that she and the highest bidder just may walk off into the sunset together is really bothering to me (the rest of it is too, obviously). Does she not realize that she is being looked at as a one night prize? A story that the douchebag will be telling to all his buddies over drinks, after he has refused to talk to her again.
@anna.the.zombie.kitteh: It might not be what she really thinks, but what she wants men to believe she thinks. It rings false to me, but it might help her fetch a high price.
It reminds me of stories from prostitutes and strippers, how men love it if they think the woman is only doing it to pay for school/is in love with them/otherwise isn't THAT kind of girl but is forced by circumstance into stripping or prostitution.

Though, I would've liked $75000 for my virginity. All I got was subway fare.
