    Name Games

For over $1,500, a London-based translation firm will perform a "baby-name audit" for parents, checking the meaning of a name in 100 languages or more. According to their linguists, Suri means "pickpocket," "turned sour" and "horse mackerels." [Reuters]

Here's a question: Do you like your name? Do you have a nickname that tends to be used in place of your name?

I'm a Kimberly, but go by Kimmy except when I'm at work. My brother called me Kimberly the other day and it freaked me the hell out, even though that's like, my name.

@LuvEwan: I'm a "Candice" and hate and loathe "Candy". I have nick-names with different groups of friends because I really don't like my name.

On your second point-- my boyfriend rarely calls me by name (we have pet names which I will not force you to hear). When he uses my full name, I always jump--somehow sounds unnatural.

@curiousgeorgiana: My middle name is atrocious. Jean.

But it is a second-born daughter tradition on my mom's side, so my mom and grandma share it. I want to incorporate it into a name for my own future kid, but I'm not sure I can really....do....that.

@token_illiterate_commenter: It's funny that we let people call us names we don't like.

I have a cousin named Elizabeth that went by Beth her entire childhood. After college, she wanted to be called "Elizabeth" and the whole family went into an uproar. "What, are you too good for Beth, now? blah blah blah". It was insane. She was 24 years old-- if she wanted to be called Ralph, I would have supported her.

@LuvEwan: I now love my first name, but when I was younger I hated it because it was uncommon at the time and actually was determined to change it Kimberly. However, I will forever hate Billy Joel for the song "Downeaster Alexa" as I have had that sung to me more times than I care for.

@LuvEwan: All us Darryl's are freakin' brilliant ;-) @curiousgeorgiana: It's not so much that I don't like it, it's just that it's not my first name. Nobody except my family ever called me by my middle name. I always had to go through the explanation when I'd have a friend over when I was a kid.

@LuvEwan: I am a Jessica. I have hated it for years and only associated with "Jes" but I just a couple of months ago started really really really like JESSICA. But I just also started working for my familys business, and everyone in my family calls me Jessie and all the coworkers hear them do it, so now suddenly in a professional setting I am being called a childhood nickname. strange.

@LuvEwan: I don't dislike my name, but it's long(ish) and it annoys me when I introduce myself and someone says, "do you have a nickname?"

Well, yes, but if I wanted you to call me by a nickname I would have already said that.

So then I kind of hem and haw and say, "only among family," or something. I don't know why this irritates me so much.

@LuvEwan: I love my name (Nora). My dad picked it because it's pronounceable and common in nearly every culture (which comes in handy more than you'd think), and that was really important to him because most of his family speaks only Italian. He also said he felt he spent so much time picking out the perfect name that it couldn't have a nickname, because then all his effort would be in vain. It came to him while he was watching The Thin Man on tv.

When I have a kid, I want their name to be universal too.

@bluebears: I was paranoid too, but then the "Hillary" post went up, and wtfox and I blew our covers. I like my name actually. It works as a kid and it works as an adult. My parents picked it out because they though it would be hard for people to create a nickname. They were wrong.
