Ah, shit. I could have sworn you were going to do "Nicole" so I could complain on behalf of Noelle name-holders that we keep getting the shaft.

    Le sigh.

Ooo! I knew a Natasha. She was very petite, with long blond hair and freckles. She masked her daintiness with black eyeliner and dark red lipstick. She wore JNCOs with a wallet chain, did drugs, drank, and had a mom who didn't care who was sleeping over. My best friend used her as an excuse. She would sneak around with her boyfriend and then go to Natasha's basement in the middle of the night. Then the "I'm sleeping over at Natasha's house!" lie would be partly true.

I always remember that Michael's dog's name in Forever was named Tasha. She was a schnauzer. I think I may have read that too many times as a teen.

I know two IRL Natashas, and neither are your high school Natasha. One is a dim receptacle who has chosen someone unfortunate with whom to reproduce, and the other is a high school friend who is pure awesome, and a gifted athlete in a sport not traditionally for women.

A friend of mine gave me the alias of "Natasha Brooksfield"... I'd like to think the description actually fits to some degree.

@Tchotchke: She's completely not my type at all, and yet I'm shockingly attracted to her. It makes watching Californication with my wife much more entertaining than just laughing at her cooing over Duchovny. Also, something about her voice and the way she speaks just kills me.

@Snowbunny: You know why I find her so beautiful too? She is unconventional by Hollywood standards. She has a bit of a nose, her eyes give off a sad, soulful vibe because they are tilted slightly downward, and her mouth is slightly crooked. But all of that is exactly what makes her so beautiful! (Also, full disclosure: I love women with strong noses. I think it's so beautiful.)

It is a pretty name, but it seems (to me, anyway) like it could be a heavy load, you know, like you might have to really work to live up to it. Then again, I have a sturdy old-timey ethnic name, so certain names just seem generally exotic and intimidating to me. This is one of them.

@Marla Singer: It will help if you accept that there really aren't any rules and it's entirely arbitrary. In fact, many people with slightly off nicknames can attribute them to a sibling's speech impediment or something totally nuts.

I imagine the Obama's just liked Sasha better than Tasha.

@Marla Singer: Sasha is the diminutive of Aleksandr in Russian. Alexandra as well, but it's especially common as a nickname for men. Natasha, is actually a Russian diminutive of Natalia. So, not really, but I guess it might be different in English...?

@Tchotchke: Oh, that's cool. So it's just an English thing, or maybe just an Obama thing, heh.
It's fascinating to me because in Spanish we mostly use a piece of the actual name and/or diminutives ("ito" and "ita"), and that's about it.

@BlondeGoddess: Yeah, except Sasha has nothing do with Natasha, which is already a diminutive of Natalya. My favorite diminutive, however, is Zhenya, and I was totally jealous of my friend Evgenia's sweet nickname. Mine is okay, though, since I get to be Anya in Russian.

@Alys Brangwin has a huge talent: Russians have the best diminutive names. It's also a really good language for cutesy nicknames and little kid voices because of the prevalence of "sshhh" and "zh" sounds. A little kid whining in Russian is the only time whining is cute.
