I think this is an interesting point. We should also remember how incredibly stigmatized post-partum depression is, even today. Both of these depressions (post-abortion, post-partum) are in my mind simply chemical and/or psychological "complications" of birth and abortion. I wouldn't use either to argue that births or abortions ahould be ended. But I would like both to be covered by health insurance. Oh, well. If I ruled the world...

Actually this can be true. D&Cs especially cause scarring on the endometrial tissue (called adhesions). If you have too many adhesions or your adhesions are too big, your uterus may stop responding to hormones. Worst case scenario is something called Asherman's Syndrome. I hate to sound like a know-it-all (because I am not) but I am studying for boards.

a lot of pro life addvocates are complete nut jobs. but some pro choicers are pretty heartless as well. one thing i've been wondering lately is why a woman can have a miscarriage at, say, 10 weeks. and it's completely okay for her to grieve and mourn and be upset over the loss of her child. but then a woman has an abortion at 10 weeks and it's just a fetus. a few hours of uncomfortable-ness and it's to be forgotten. i don't get the logic of that.

However, because our reproductive rights are so regularly threatened, I think a lot of us are afraid to admit that yes, sometimes women do feel sad or regret it because we're afraid it will be used as fodder to legislate our bodies. Also, the cultural narrative is that you're not really allowed to talk about your abortion unless you're having a tearful change of heart, so it's not like there's a lot of open discussion about how women feel about them. Jezebel is one of the few places there is that discussion, and what you're finding is women have a wide range of reactions.

I may never comment on what they feel, just support the woman, but for me, as rudimentary awareness and pain perception appear at 20 weeks at the earliest*, the fetuses are just developing tissue. And tissue removal, whether a tumor, growth, or embryo is just that.
I understand that others might put much more significance on them, and I'm ok with that but simply don't share it.
* according to different studies done in order to determine at which point we should administer some forms of analgesics to fetuses undergoing surgery.

But that's the crux of the abortion debate, isn't it? When does a mass of cells become a child/person/baby instead of an embryo or fetus?

It seems to be the crux of the debate, but it shouldn't be. The "crux" of the abortion debate ought also to be, should fetuses have special rights not granted to living persons? Because courts have consistently ruled, for example, that you can't force someone to be a kidney donor--even to save their already-born child's life.
And I have a feeling that if I was going to hook myself up to Leslie Unruh intravenously, use her kidneys and blood supply for my own, and engorge her uterus so that I could take up residence there for 9 months, and she didn't want me there, no court would grant me a legal right to do so.

It's similar to atheists like Bill Maher who think the answer to overcoming religious orthodoxy is to mock religion.

I doubt the Jezzies would ever deride anyone who was telling a story of their own abortion and asking for support, but the rest of the time this is the whistling-in-the-dark approach used to keep us from being scared at what the far right would try to keep us from doing, and why.

It shouldn't be that complicated. Jezebel does a great job handling most moral/religious topics in a mature, respectful and humorous manner. But there's a lot of reflexive belittling of the opposition on this issue.

may I ask: would you have had an abortion if you hadn't had a miscarriage? If so, your feeling of relief should not result in any guilt as, hey, the termination did happen "naturally".
@Speeble :fucking guys!!! good riddance right sista?
