The mother played a HUGE role in this catastrophe and seeing her push the blame on someone else makes me sick. Not only did she raise her daughter to be reactive in the way that she was, she yelled at her when she came to her crushed after the "bullying" got to the worst point, and didn't do anything to stop the attacks NOR her daughter's internet access when she found out about it long before it got out of hand. She ignored her daughter's pleas for love and comfort. She could have save her daughter's life, in my opinion.

I was talking with my 12-year-old cousin on Thanksgiving, and she said her mom won't let her have a MySpace. Probably for the best. Granted, she's a year younger than Megan was, but she's middle school age now and I can't imagine how I would feel if someone did something like that to her. She's still a kid! Can't Megan's family get some kind of settlement out of this for intentional infliction of emotional distress? It seems like that would be a lot easier to prosecute.

And, another note: this was worth it, if only to keep the idea that this is going in the public eye. What I'm afraid of, is this fading from prominence, that now that the trial is over and once the sentencing is concluded, this too will fade into the backs of the minds of people until the next time. This issue can never be laid to rest -- we cannot allow people to use the Internet as a weapon with impunity.

I wasn't sure if this case really qualified as a legal precedent.

@BeckySharper: I have to agree - I don't think this is going to work as a legal precendent. They kind of tried to fit a square peg into a legal round hole to prosecute this case. But MAYBE it will result in some legislation that is aimed at addressing cyber bullying?

@BeckySharper: No, there still really aren't any clear cut rules on the interent which makes internet crimes really hard to prosecute.

I kinda hoped that they could get her on something because, clearly, what she did was BAD, but we need laws before we can punish offenders.

@BeckySharper: I don't think she will. She might be tempted, but Lori Drew has nothing, and as she said, it doesn't bring Megan back. I may be wrong, but Tina does not strike me as that kind of woman. Even when baited, she has not attacked Lori Drew virulently. I think she sees this as vindication and as justice being served, and I don't think she'll rest until society acknowledges the scope of this problem.

I think this seems okay based on what they were charging her with. Computer hacking? Really? Even if she was convicted of computer hacking... is that a punishment that really makes sense here?

I'm thinking that justice will be served via a civil suit.

Also, I really do think that Lori Drew will suffer a lot due to public shaming, etc.

Hopefully this will spurn legislators to act. the failure is that there is no law that applies to this sort of disgusting behavior, therefore what they were charging her under didn't really fit. These types of cases will keep showing up until we get a good law on the books and can start properly prosecuting these sick people.

@R_Claw...v.2.01 now comes with hope for the future.: You are not paying attention to what happened here. The jury did hold that the TOS were violated to gain unauthorized info. They just said it wasn't done in furtherance of a tort.

@bluebears: Well, here's the thing. The TOS-reading fact should have knocked the thing out altogether if the jury cared about it - not just knocked the thing down to a misdemeanour.

As to the second half, I fail to see how that doesn't get you on conspiracy.

@bluebears: Maybe they could not prove it legally, but morally it doesn't matter who thought up what in my opinion. Drew is a grown woman who should have not only not participated in the torment of a 13 year old girl, but should have put a stop to it and alerted the girl's parents. Civil suit should be coming in 3.. 2.. 1.

And just saying - not a disagreement with you.

@PilgrimSoul: yeah, I agree but perhaps the jury wanted to send some sort of message? wouldn't surprise me. As to conspiracy, I'm assuming it was conspiracy to commit computer fraud? Maybe they just didn't feel the Prosecution met the burden to show intent on Drews part.
