What stupid thing can I do so that someone will offer me $500,000 dollars to do porn? Seriously, I could use the cash. I'd love to get rewarded for my idiotic behavior.
@JennaW: One gossip site I read claims this one is Brittany Murphy. She's married to a random dude who has a rap sheet and had drug problems in the past, and she's been fired from a couple of movies in a row. That could explain the "I can't believe she got another movie" line.
Mmkay, Nia Vardalos is fat? I'll admit she hasn't really been on my radar, but I did see MBFGW and I never once thought she was fat. Not a twig, maybe, but "fat"??
@BatCat!: We are not talking about real-world standards here. She is quoting movie producers. Her point is that Hollywood operates on a very different definition of female body standards.
@kelsium: Yes, but coming out now and self-labeling as "fat" despite the whole reclaiming the term/empowerment bent she's given it also seems iffy to me. She's doing as much to shift the paradigm as the Hollywood producers when she starts applying the "fat" word to perfectly normal healthy-weighted women such as herself.
@BatCat!: Only if you hold the view that "fat" is a negative term. The whole idea of fat-positivism and reclaiming the term is that it is not a negative label. There is nothing here that is meant to make other women say "oh god, if she's fat I'm a WHALE!" Vardalos is saying that she is, indeed, fat by Hollywood standards and that she accepts that and does not see it as a negative. There is nothing objectionable about that.
@BatCat!: And, if you read the statement, Vardalos does not ever say that she is fat. She just says that it isn't a bad word, and that when we're talking about weight we shouldn't automatically equate "fat" and "unnattractive". They are not synonymous.
@kelsium: You're right, she never actually calls herself fat, but she seems to be implying that it would be perfectly okay if the producers had called her that. And yes, I'm totally down with the whole fat-positivism movement--I read & love BFD--but my point was that objectively, she didn't carry enough weight to have the label applied to her. Say we did the same thing with the term "short." And the producers didn't think she was tall or amazonian enough for their liking and decided to say things like she was "unappealing" or "undertall" in reference to her height. And she comes out later and says, "Just call me short! There's nothing wrong with that!" When she's actually 5'8" or whatever (I have no idea how tall she actually is, so forgive me). That was my only point.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a little sentimental for me, I didn't love it. However, I DID love that while the protagonist goes through the conventional defrumping, it has nothing to do with the guy and everything to do with the fact that she wants to totally change her life, and when the couple talks about her before and after it turns out he noticed her all along.
@kelsium: That aspect of the film is a pretty realistic view of someone who did not value herself and that showed by how she looked before; when she did begin to value herself and take control of her life, she did things for herself that also made her look better, and you're right -- it was all about herself for herself and not the guy which made it awesome.
@BeckySharper: I don't watch very many movies so I don't really pay enough attention to the trailers/magazine articles about upcoming movies to know much about her movie or the nude scenes there in, but when I read that quote I get a "don't want to see her naked with a guy other than myself" kind of vibe.
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: Two years ago, he was filming The Sopranos at The Gansevoort and we would see him pretty much every morning. He talked to my sister apropos of nothing and was later heard telling random families kah-razy stories about the Baldwin brothers!
@victoriasauce: For real. Sorry you made a mistake by marrying the wrong woman and having 8 kids. Unfortch, you kinda need to live with that mistake for about 12 more years because of the whole 8 kids thing. He's being completely selfish and needs to grow up, but then that's always been my impression of him.
Did anyone else watch that "Raising Sextuplets"? I didn't mean to, but it was on at like 11:30 last night and I just fell in. It's almost the same situation where the wife is doing everything, and the husband is complaining constantly about how tired he is and how hard it is to have sextuplets. Like Kate, that wife was kind of a harpy (she sent her 30 lb overweight husband to the obesity doctor to be put on a 2-shake-a-day-plus-a-meal-diet), but I'm kinda thinking I would be a harpy if I had sextuplets. You can't control any of the 6 toddlers, clearly, but you can control your husband!
@victoriasauce: Well, apparently she cheated on him, too. None of us will know the real/whole story, but she does come across as a deeply unlikeable person.
@Antrack: I'm reminded of that girl from that 16 and Pregnant episode that was posted here on Jez the other day. That poor girl had only one baby and a very lazy boyfriend and was so stressed - multiply her frustration x8, and suddenly, she goes from being a girl who pleads with her boyfriend for very valid reasons to a nag like Kate.
@victoriasauce: Actually Jon gave up his job to be a stay at home dad. I'm not excusing cheating but I think a lot of this is being trumped up (no one knows if he actually cheated) and she's always tried to make sure that she comes out looking good so I'm sure she's probably staying with the kids right now because it garners sympathy.
I also read (on Jez I believe) that TLC has this all planned for a huge reconciliation (read: big ratings) at the end of the season.
@victoriasauce: It's only in the last few weeks that Kate has "always been with the kids." Jon has been the one staying home ever since they were babies when Kate was still working as a nurse. Then as the Gosselins became more famous, Kate started traveling to promote her books and the show and would be gone for days/weeks at a time. It's only now that the cheating allegations came out and that it's known she would travel alot that Kate is staying home with the kids/making sure she's being seen with the kids. She wants to come off looking like the victim and better parent.
That being said, I was watching an episode the other day from a past season and I forgot how in love they used to seem even with Kate criticizing Jon for every little thing. It seems like she's 10x worse than she was then.
I have kind of a soft spot for Reese. In a world where a lot of trim, fit, conventionally attractive, blue-eyed blonde actresses attract a great deal of attention for being sort of vapid and giddy, Reese is a trim, fit, conventionally attractive blue-eyed blonde actress who comes across as being very self-possessed and assertive.
I'll take "slightly prickly" over "OH LOL DUH WHAT LOL" any day.

And I wish that picture showed the rest of Reese Witherspoon's outfit. If it's a dress, I want it. If it's a shirt, I could never pull it off.

It's reality TV.
This manufactured drama is raising the ratings and selling the books. Look for a touching reconciliation at the end of the season.
