I will argue (cause it's that kinda Sunday) that the reason there are so few Black people (or other minorities) in these movies based in major cities is that most White people just don't notice the many non-Black people around them everyday. Yeah, that's gotta be it, right? RIGHT?

I have shame! I loved the books. The movie looks horrific in the trailers and my heart goes out to you for having to sit through it. I can only hope the rum made it seem at least slightly more reasonable

The books had their silly bits but apparently the movie took that up by 5 orders of magnitude

The books were hilarious and at least you figured out at the end that she's not a total idiot, but this movie is so damn pathetic. As always Jezebel, godspeed to you guys for taking the brunt for me :D

My fave part of the book is when she spends a fortune on a notebook to keep track of her spending with. That's why the books are funny -- 'cause they hook you with real things that you might really do.

I've actually read this book, god help me, and the plot isn't anything like the movie apparently. It doesn't sound any better or worse, though.

I read it while travelling, when you'll read anything you find at the hostel. It is the only book I've ever considered throwing away so that no one else would read it.

I stood there, hand over the bin - but the daughter of a school teacher in me kicked in, and I dutifully put it in the next hostel's book exchange.

@maryn: I read this book under similar circumstances (travelling, nothing else to read...) Still embarassed to admit it. But I pitched it in a recycling box when done.

What I remember was that she didn't change her shop-a-holic ways, but that she just found a job that paid more thus enabling her to carry on in the same way. It's fuzzy though, I could be wrong. Could just have been some kind of nightmare I had.

I guess you could rationalize it by saying that COAS works on an allegorical level, too. The United States is the protagonist, Rebecca, spending, spending, spending on useless crap (Iraq war, abstinence-only sex education, e.g.) and borrowing, borrowing, borrowing from credit card companies (China and, well, probably lots of other countries). We've found ourselves in pickle and we're finally reform-minded, but it's going to take a dashing, clever, and charmingly self-deprecating Englishman to pull us out of this downward spiral (yeah, this is where the metaphor breaks down, any takers?).

@Macloserboy: What? Seriously? I was referencing Dodai's post from last week in which she implored us to stop seeing movies we think are stupid because it just reinforces the idea that women love such movies. I was trying to make a funny with my ridiculous conceit, an attempt that clearly failed, and I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to say that I don't really want to see a movie based on shopping. It's fine if you do, but please don't compare me to Christian rightwing nutbags for something so innocuous.

People need to start paying Isla Fisher more. I hate the notion of the book, I hate the notion of the film, and it's timing, given the world economy, is atrocious, BUT Isla's press performance has me almost, *almost* warming to it.

I bet they're thanking their lucky stars they didn't choose Gwynnie for the lead.
