I'm a crazed knitter (why yes, I did knit the sweater I'm wearing today, thank you), but I'm not really into the whole "ironic art knitting" movement. Mostly because I don't see knitting as ironic. I'm not doing it to be rebellious or to reappropriate the womanly arts. I'm doing it because I like making stuff. And I think this kind of art project renders it a bit twee.

half-baked "feminist" fiber art does no favor to feminism, fiber art, nor to art generally.

with that said, persons blog-commenting their qualms about "modern art" based on work like this do get my goat in a serious way. it's contemporary art, for starters, and if you think this kind of work is representative of contemporary art practice (feminist, fiber-based, or otherwise), i suggest you get off the internet and get thee to an actual gallery or museum.

@superineficaz: Complaining about people saying "modern" art when they mean "contemporary" is like complaining about people saying "classical music" when talking about Beethoven. Beethoven isn't classical but, for all intents and purposes, that's become the broader category. Ditto the term "modern art." Cut people some slack here...

I have a friend who knitted cozies for her handcuffs. She was into bondage, but not chaffing, apparently.

She did it completely unironically; simply as a solution to a problem. That's WAY more interesting that this project...

I bristle a bit at the identification of the housewife as so bored and lonely--ie, pathetic--that she would knit a cozy for a toilet paper roll. First of all, one has to start somewhere, and maybe she wanted something more challenging than a scarf, but less challenging than a sweater for practice. Secondly, maybe she came from families who liked toilet paper cozies (I suggest just hiding the offense extra roll in the bathroom cabinet, but whatever). I think her art is patronizing rather than supportive and empathetic.

@reallyshouldbeworking: I knit a good deal, and if I made a toilet paper cozy it would likely be because I just wanted to do a small project to keep my hands busy. Making a toilet paper cozy is not an act of despair - more like whimsy. I haven't made any, but I have threatened to knit a computer monitor cozy for my boss, just for fun.

i just finished a felted knitted tea cozy last night. i don't normally knit stuff so domestic, preferring something more fashion related, but it turned out pretty awesome if i must say.

i'm not sure a motorcycle cozy would even end up at a flea market though....just not sure about that one.

This is the problem I have with modern art: The artists just seem like they are trying so hard to be tongue in cheek and edgy, and they just come off as assholes.

A knit machine gun or a screwdriver cozy is cute for an etsy shop, but its not something I really consider very edgy or avant garde.
