I am late today..but Magic Johnson is a real jerk!! He is involved with SHADY real estate group(DERMOT) that is eviciting long time tenants in Brooklyn..HE is a jerk and health insurance for his employees is the least of his sins!!
Will Smith to remake Old Boy? Seriously? Um have you seen Old Boy? Not even Will Smith can make can make that movie main stream if they're planning on sticking to the original storyline. This boggles my mind....
The Black Racket sketch was pretty funny until it got to the Amelie Mauresmo part and dragged up every stereotype it could find. (She's a lesbian, so she must really be a man right? Hahahaha! And not just a bull dyke, but the epitome of evil! OMG so funny!)
That Nazi Tom Cruise film looks so incredibly bad. Everyone around him has a German or English accent and in rolls Tom with his American accent. It looks insanely dreadful.
@PetiteGal: if you can't see new posts, email the tips line with your computer and operating system, as well as location. it's not happening for everybody.
OK, enough of this stuff about Tom Cruise. I've never been a fan of his off-screen, but he's made some great films. So now he's in a film about Nazis and he's doing a Heil Hitler salute and that's funny? Why is it funny? He's an actor. He plays a Nazi. That's what Nazis did. And why is it worse to play a Nazi with an American accent than to play one with a British accent, as has been done in the past? This film has got Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and Eddie Izzard in it. I refuse to believe that it's as crap as everyone makes out. Well, at least until I see it...
@heykoukla: Also, what is with the quote: "The film just isn't a thriller at all. It's a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms..." Huh? The Nazis did not tend to encourage multi-ethnic recruitment in their ranks.
@heykoukla: The accent thing... I think the issue is that he has an American accent, everyone else has an English accent of various sorts. Really they are all competent actors who could have pulled off a single unified German accent.
The other issue I think is that some of these men are revered as heroes in Germany. Many of them spent the entire war thinking up ways to kill Hitler, making several attempts and eventually giving their lives for the resistance. Germany has made its own movies about them... in German.
Lots of places in Europe regard scientology as a cult so to them it's a bit like seeing Warren Jeffs star in a movie about Patton. It's hard not to view it as farcical.
@heykoukla: Those of us who don't speak English as a first language are very happy with the absence of a German accent. Well, I am, anyway.
Why? Because as little sense as a German speaking unaccented English makes, having them speak accented English is even more nonsensical, because it promotes the idea that the character (or historical figure) ACTUALLY spoke English. If a movie is not done in the original language, then for chrissakes don't try to fake it with accents. They're always the wrong ones anyway. I've hardly ever heard English with an ACTUAL Dutch accent in English/American movies. They're either German or Russian, or just overall weird.
Also, like I said above, I'll do my best to support this movie for Carice van Houten. Probably won't see it in the theatre (I'm already throwing my money away on Twilight) but I'll rent it.
@heykoukla: I love the entire Brit cast. I honestly didn't realize they were in it until I saw a preview this weekend.
However, as great as they are, Tom Cruise still strolled on to screen two minutes into the preview, and he acted so woodenly throughout the clips that it overshadowed the magnificent Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson.
@heykoukla: Yeah, I don't understand the complaints about his using an American accent (i.e., speaking in his own accent rather than adopting a different one). They should all be speaking German, but instead they are speaking English. That's the real break from fidelity. Adding some accent to their English doesn't make it any closer to the German-speaking reality than does just letting each actor use his/her own accent.
@FormicaLinoleum: The thing about language is that if it had all be in German, it probably wouldn't have been made, at least not for the audience it's geared towards now. Because foreign films are icky, dontchaknow?!
I mean, there are FABULOUS, high quality films being made all over the world, but most films in a language other than English will not be a blockbuster.
@Little Time Bomb: If there had never been a German film made about these men, I could understand Germans being upset about the appropriation of their story. But this is a Hollywood version of the events, and it's taking their story to a whole new audience - I don't think that's a bad thing. @haguenite: @FormicaLinoleum: I agree on the accents. To an English-speaking audience, having the characters speak with German accents gives them an air of "otherness" in their own country. It does not belong. @dianersb: I've seen the trailer at the movies, and I agree that it's definitely "Tom Cruise" walking into the scene. But I think that's the case in all his films, no?
@haguenite: Not bowing to Hollywood conventions is what makes many foreign films interesting, because they can go for the sad ending or the unresolved plotline, and it's okay because we understand we are all grown-ups and that's how life is sometimes. I'll got through phases - I'll watch some foreign films (mostly French), swear I'll never watch Holywood rubbish again and then I'll get to a stage where I'll go "I can't stand it anymore, I need my neat Hollywood ending!!!"
@heykoukla: Yeah, it was a bit like, here are all these wonderful actors...but wait there's more! Here's Tom Cruise! Look at Tom Cruise. He's wearing an eye patch and a uniform! And he's going to try to bring down the bad guy! Yay Tom Cruise.
Again, not unlike his other movies.
Also, at this very moment one of my best friends is disowning me. She loves her some Cruise.
@heykoukla: I think the "Hollywood version" of events is what bothers people. There have been controversies over lots of historical film through the ages. When fictional versions of real stories are presented opinion always differs.
