Can't watch the video now (will try at lunch) but oh, I'm tearing up just thinking about how wonderful my mom is, all the things, big and small, she's done for me. So I feel you, Sotomayor.
I looked her up, and her birthday is one day before mine. We late June kiddos are cool.
And as to confirmation -- I don't think the Republicans can do a thing to stop her. And let's face it: George Bush Sr. put her on the Federal bench in the first place. This will prove interesting, but ultimately, will leave the Republicans feeling impotent.
Now: the fight. The right wing is already screeching about how she's "hard-left" and how horrible it is that she believes judges should "consider the experiences of women and people of color" in their decisions.
According to this article, the four attacks lines are going to be:
1) She's dumb.
2) She's a radical leftist judicial activist
3) She's "unprincipled and dismissive of opinions with which she doesn't agree" --in other words, she's not like the rest of the "bi-partisan" "serious" people in Washington.
4) She's "gruff and impersonable" --in other words, strong woman = uppity bitch.
@ALittleBitGothic: There's a fantastic quote Foxnews is pushing from her about how a smart latina woman with different experiences might make better decisions than a white man who hasn't had that experience.
HOLY CRAP she thinks she's better than white men??! This is what happens when you don't put minorities and women in their proper place...Seriously, this is hilarious to watch.
@ALittleBitGothic: What's funny is that while they see these as bad things, I think the first is a line of bullshit and the other three make her even cooler to me.
@ALittleBitGothic: I was listening to NPR in the lead-up to the announcement, and her former law school instructor, who later served with her on (I don't remember which bench, sorry) -- and who is clearly an old, old man, just from the sound of his voice -- basically went "Bish plz," as soon as the NPR reporter brought up #4. He said, bascially: "On the bench, I think she acts pretty much as a man would, and some people think that a woman shouldn't act like that. There is nothing wrong with her behavior."
@AlmostDream: It's hilarious how one can never, ever underestimate the ability of FOX News to completely obliterate the context in which a person speaks. And by hilarious, I mean "funny, yet disquieting".
@Tangy.Nihilista.Barcelona: Oh honey, yay! I used to live far away and had to go loooong stretches like that, too, and it can be really hard. Have fun!
Moms are so awesome! In all the wedding photos with me and my mom, tears are streaming down my face. I couldn't control it. I completely understand where Sotomayor is coming from.

I love that man, and want to send him flowers.

I bet that is word for word what went through the Fox News execs' heads when they saw the quote. Word for freaking word.
