I think the White House is making a mistake in lumping FOX News as a whole in with its opinion programming. According to the Press Secretary, it sounds like they're annoyed with Beck (who used to work for CNN) and Hannity, who are both opinion commentators. They're annoying as hell, but they are not, nor are they being presented as, factual news reporters. It seems petty to launch an attack against them when they're basically just talking heads. FOX News in general doesn't seem to be any more biased than CNN or the New York Times. #helenthomas
@FrabjousDay: I agree with you to an extent. But when FOX harbors the type of insanity that Glenn Beck spews on a daily basis, they lose a lot of credibility. Bias exists on all levels of journalism. Glen Beck makes it personal, and his station allows it. I think the President has bigger fish to fry, but I don't mind a jab now and then from him or the press secretary. Beck's fear-mongering reflects on the entire corporation of FOX and should not be tolerated. #helenthomas
@curiousgeorgiana: Right, and one of my problems with both FOX and CNN is that they have all these talk shows and opinion shows that you never know whether it's "news" or personal commentary. What I do think is annoying is that the White House is calling out the opinion shows that disagree with them, instead of the opinion shows that just go on about how awesome Obama is. I don't think Glenn Beck is any more offensive than, for instance, Rachel Maddow, who calls conservatives tea baggers. If the White House had a problem with opinion shows being broadcast on news networks, I would wholeheartedly back them up. But the way they're handling whatever problem they have with FOX News is just stupid. #helenthomas
This situation reminds me of when a friend was with an emotionally abusive partner. When I would try to talk to her, he would whisper in her ear so she couldn't listen to me. He would tell her that I was trying to break them up, knowing full well that it prevented me from saying anything negative about him as it would show that he was the one telling the truth.
How does the Administration deal with an abusive news organization? FOX will continue whispering in the ears of millions of Americans. #helenthomas
Plenty of people already call out Fox News for its shenanigans. I'd rather hear the Obama team call out the senators and representatives who are ignoring their constituents' demands for a public health option. Or, better yet, maybe they could call out themselves for supporting Bush-era detention schemes and endless wars. Y'know, minor shit like that. #helenthomas
I was watching CNN recently, and they had a White House staffer on who was talking (for a really long time--I was doing something else, but it seemed like it crossed several commerical breaks) about how Fox was the propaganda arm of the RNC. The whole time, I was thinking, "well, yeah, of course, and everyone either knows it or has bought into the 'Fair and Balanced' schtick. Either way, you're not going to win any converts, and you kind of look like you're whining." Looks like Helen Thomas and I think alike. #helenthomas
While I agree that it may not be the place of the current administration to take down Fox News, somebody needs to do it. They are not the messengers, they are the liars.
This isn't a matter of Fox News simply proffering a viewpoint that skews wildly towards the right. It's them doing so while providing false data and outright lies that defame public figures and organizations without apology or redaction.
The lies and misinformation spewed by Fox News is a danger not only to the public and truth itself but also to journalism as a whole. Journalism is a struggling medium, one whose true purpose is frequently lost in the hustle and glitter of new media. The attitude of most people, even many people on the left, is that Fox is a ridiculous and illegitimate entity, but one that cannot be silenced because people like it and it makes money.
Someone needs to threaten Fox with some sort of meaningful censure, because there are people out there who believe what they say to be the gospel truth. I'm all for threatening them with forced disclaimers on their broadcasts that read: "The opinions expressed in this broadcast are not based upon reality." Until then, I'll just keep not watching it. #helenthomas
@BetteD: Yes. What on earth ever happened to the stipulation that broadcasters had to broadcast "in the public interest?" I realize that condition applied to use of the broadcast spectrum and not the current, cable-dominant system, but those four little words brought us some (not perfect) but pretty decent news for many years.
I mean, I'll continue to not watch cable news, but I'm afraid the "if you don't like it, don't watch it" approach will not lead to the high-quality news that we all deserve. #helenthomas
@logruszed: Yes. Maybe that's the problem. That the "public interest" has come to mean what the public is interested in rather than what is in our interest as the public. #helenthomas
Oh yeah - this is basically the solid message of "do not stoop to their level."
If you can address lies and misinformation with logic and facts without losing your shit (I can't), fine - but heaven forfend you mention WHO told the lie - goodness knows they'll just use THAT against you. *swear word swear word swear word* #helenthomas
@sybann: Or it's let's just accept the status quo and allow a vile propaganda organization to continue to pretend it's something it's not. That's great news for the public. #helenthomas
God, I hope she's slowly poisoning him with cyanide, a la Flowers in the Attic, and the reason why she doesn't call him out is 'cuz she doesn't want to be a suspect.
@snark_shark: I'm pretty sure she was about 15 seconds away from shanking him, for real. Did you see the look on her face? She hates him. Not that anyone could blame her. I'd probably freak the hell out.
On a show last December, Papa Zbig said to Joe "You know, you have such a stunningly superficial knowledge of what went on (in the Bush admin) that it's almost embarrassing listening to you." Yeah, a stunningly superficial knowledge of everything.
remember when he had that temper tantrum when Shuster disagreed with him about the repubs b.s. re Iraq withdrawal? She had to be "peace maker" during that.
@bluebears: Thanks for this. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post. Soooo uncomfortable. She deserves a medal for sitting next to his smug self.
@mfnher: ugh. when he called out Shuster for SLEEPING THROUGH HIS ALARM?? I'm sure everyone on that panel knows that if they really press him he'll embarrass them.
@bluebears: I think he's too stupid to know what he means
I find it amusing for another reason, though, because if the wife is standing outside probate court, well ... she doesn't have to worry too much anymore about what he's gonna say next.
@bluebears: He's using the fancy word "probate" to make himself look smarter than he is, and actually ends up looking dumber by indirectly revealing that he doesn't know that probate court is where wills are proved. It's sort of like the email I received from Yelp about brewpubs today that referred to "the penultimate pour." Now I know where to get my second-to-last beer, I suppose.
