    I'm a pretty avid cook, and I wear Crocs ALL THE TIME. In the house, of course. Mine are bright green, and I love them.


    Yes, they're ugly, but I cannot get over the fact that I can cook for 12 hours, set the table, clean the apartment, and not have sore feet. Pretty freaking amazing.

    I mostly just find him funny because I have never seen him wear anything else EVER. Like I picture a cartoon-like closet where its just rows and rows of orange crocs and he looks into there every morning deciding which of all the matching shoes he'll wear today.

    @sexandphilosophy: I really think he does. He lived near my old apartment and his kids' school was around the corner. Every morning, I'd see him walking his kids down the street - red flannel jacket, sweatpants, orange Crocs.

    Don't crocs breed foot bacteria or something? I know I read something about a hospital that didn't allow its doctors to wear them. Was that just an urban myth? If it's true, that can't be very great in the kitchen.

    My husband is a chef, and he and all the other chefs do wear Crocs, but IN THE KITCHEN. They're these no-slip, breathable shoes that you can just wipe down, so it makes sense, right? But they take them off when they're done. Mario missed that memo, I guess.

    @misspell: Well, I stand corrected. I hereby rescind my earlier comment wherein I assumed that they would suck for kitchen shoes.


    I will now assume there must be solid-top versions that chefs wear? Or is an open shoe not so dangerous as one might think?

    @slowpoke.r: Yeah, they're solid on top, for sure, to prevent any unnecessary foot-scalding. I had a hard time believing that they worked, too, and I still laugh when I see them wearing them. Especially with the otherwise classic chef clothes, these things stick out like sore thumbs.

    Wearing bright orange shoes =/= not caring about what anyone thinks.


    Also, wearing shoes with holes all over them =/= professional kitchen footwear. God forbid someone spill some hot grease anywhere near his feet. Or drop a knife point down.

    Also, did you see Flay on REAL Iron Chef? He got shocked by his stove, whined like a baby, and jumped on his cutting board. He's totally a dick. His food looks good, but no way would I want to hang out with him.

    @Nora Bombay: I don't know. My husband is a chef with Fred Flinstone feet and he hasn't had a problem. He LOVES his birkenstocks and wears them with two pairs of socks, in order to give himself extra cushion. I think the idea of wearing crocs in the kitchen is icky.

    @mharker: it was. i was working at a garden center when they first came out. and i thought to myself, 'oh, how fun! they come in hot pink!'


    i had noooo idea what crocs would one day unleash on my fair state. things are EVERYWHERE. i recently saw a whole family with matching crocs. terrifying.
