Quote: "admits she won't acknowledge the rest of the Breakfast Club once school resumes" of Claire from the Breakfast Club.
Wait, she is LOSING points for that? I always thought she GAINED them for being the only honest one there. Everyone sort of mumbles "yeah, sure, we'll still talk" but every single one of them knows that it's not true. Well, Claire says it. They're not being honest with themselves and she's the only one who is.
Just my two cents.
With the exception of Ferris Bueller, I've always felt that Hughes' films are incredibly poorly written, in no small part because he never figured out how to craft a worthwhile female character.
you know, i was one of those girls that the other high school girls always wanted to "make over". i blame movies like the breakfast club and many more after that; clueless etc were more my generation. movies like this create unrealistic expectations both for the maker over and the makee. it didn't change a damn thing. except giving me a chance to smoke pot with the girl who gave me a horrible jennifer anniston haircut. no boys did a double take when i walked into school the next day. i still didn't know how to talk to the other kids and spent PE class hiding in the art room. i'm not exactly complaining, i just have a lot of mistrust for that makeover concept. i cut my own hair and learned to make friends when i got to college.
"You look good wearing my future." Watts was the only girl in a John Hughes movie who loved a guy for all the right reasons. Claire wanted to rebel so she went with Bender. Samantha was in love with the idea of someone - not the real person. Same thing with Andie. Only Watts fell in love with the real person, the whole package. Ok, so she is a bit of martyr, but when she teaches him how to kiss and he grabs her ass, you kinda want to melt...
Anyone else marvel at the fact that Mary Stuart Masterson didn't become a big time film star? At Close Range, Fried Green Tomatoes...Masterson was amazing on screen.
Sorry guys, but I think Jeannie Bueller was an archetypal "hysterical, annoying female" part. She's obsessed with Ferris getting away with more than she does and is extremely one-note until....she makes out with a hot guy at the police station, after which she regains a little sanity. I'd have graded her much lower.
@Hooplehead: Her obsession with crushing Ferris under her heel never bothered me. It was her lack of success. As someone with siblings, I knew sisters were good at crushing irritating little brothers like bugs. What annoyed me was the parents/adults who always bought Ferris' line of crap and let him get away with shit. I hated guys like that in school.
@My_Latest_Incarnation: I'd say that depends on the family, entirely. Sisters can only be successful in crushing out entitlement where the parents back up their efforts. There are some families determined to turn little boys into spoiled little shitheads, regardless of how much the sisters complain about it.
I was a non-teen in the 80s but I remember loving these movies. However watching them as an adult is a bit of a let down. The characters are all so DRAMATIC which is of course typical teen behavior. He really did make the ultimate for teens/about teens movies. All this is to say, when I read this list I find myself unable to really identify with any of these characters.
i love allison.. as for the makeover, yea it is kinda disheartening to see a girl who was cool before change.. but isn't it growing too??? new interests, new relationships change how you feel about yourself allow you to try to change yourself without being scared..
and i don't know since i was ten i have melted every time emilio estevez looks at her when she walks into the room...
@MagentaCuppa: I always thought that the makeup was kind of like armor for her-like the black and the weirdness and saying things for shock value. All meant to keep people away. I felt like her letting the makeup be taken off meant that she was turning a bit of a corner. And yes, the way he looked at her was adorable.
@Hooplehead: I agree with this. She seems to open up more when she gets the makeover, which is a little corny, but its not like she is suddenly "normal." She is just less closed off. Her hair is out of her face, her eyes are wide open. I have the feeling she allowed herself to be made over because she wanted to try something new, not because she wanted to win over a guy. She will probably experiment with her style over and over, like a lot of teenagers.
I have to disagree with your analysis of both Amanda Jones and Watts.
I think Amanda grew a lot throughout the movie. She must be upgraded to at least B+ simply for her amazing double-slap of Blaine in the movie's party scene. She also gave back the earrings, if I remember correctly.
Watts gave me a stalkerish vibe. I found her chauffering them around on the date a bit scary. I kind of wondered if she'd have a creepy shrine to Keith if she didn't have her drums.
Of course, I'd have a creepy shrine to Keith, too. Eric Stoltz was incredibly hot!
I haven't read through all Hortense's labour of love yet because I got distracted by the visual of a wasted Charlie Sheene at the police department. He was so hawt way back then! Hawt I tell ya!
Ferris and Jeannie were twins, no? If she's the older sister still in high school when Ferris is a senior, she either stayed back a year or they're the same age. I vote for twins because there's no indication that she would be held back for any reason.
Yes, this has seriously been on my mind since the movie came out.
@TheGuvnah: I probably saw it first saw it 15 years ago when I was 25 or so. It's really 80s to be sure but there was an element of truth (painfully so) that makes it essential viewing. Especially if someone was a teenager during that time.
It has been 20+ years, and I'm a bit jaded in the teen-queen department, but Watts, Andie, and Jeannie Bueller would kick the stretch pants off Hannah Montana any day.
