Baynes (via Feminist Law Professors), the government has actually encouraged America's obsession with missing white women like Natalee Holloway. In the days of the Fairness Doctrine (1949 to the late 1980s), TV stations had to broadcast some balanced coverage of important issues. When that ended, media outlets had no incentive to run anything but stories that would generate quick ratings aka missing white women. Baynes writes, "the media ecology is now set up in a manner that “nudges” media audiences to consume the tabloid cookies and candy as opposed to the public interest broccoli." So should the government go back to force-feeding us broccoli?

Baynes explores how the media create a Missing White Women brand, "an echo effect across a variety of media platforms that actually sell these women’s tragic stories." (Interestingly, he cites People magazine as the "jump off" point between tabloid and "legitimate" news, because it is owned by Time Warner, which also owns CNN.) He links the phenomenon back to the Perils of Pauline, a serialized silent film with weekly cliffhangers in which its white heroine hung off actual cliffs. Baynes says that "the anxiety over white women resonates in our culture," perhaps because white women are put on a pedestal while women of color have historically been "exoticized and exploited." Baynes quotes Catherine McKinnon on "the white women stereotype":

The creature is not poor, not battered, not raped (not really), not molested as a child, not pregnant as a teenager, not prostituted, not coerced into pornography, not a welfare mother and not economically exploited. She doesn’t work. [...] she manipulates white men’s very real power with the lifting of her very manicured little finger…She flings her hair, feels beautiful all the time...can’t do anything, doesn’t do anything, doesn’t know anything…

Baynes argues that American culture feels the need to protect (or pretend to protect) such artificially pristine women, especially from "the threats of men of color." And this desire for protection equals ratings! Baynes cites speculations that the "soap opera" of the missing white woman allows us to escape from scary real news, like the war in Iraq. There's little question that focusing on Natalee Holloway rather than Abu Ghraib makes us dumber (unless of course we're her family, or the cops investigating her case). It probably also makes us more racist. So is the solution a return of the Fairness Doctrine? Do we need the FCC to step in and enforce important news? How will they decide what's important? And, raised on a diet of Missing White Girl Scout cookies, will we even watch it?

<![CDATA[CBS News has noticed something others have...]]> dawna41108.jpgCBS News has noticed something others have been saying for months: missing women of color don't get any press. "When Laci Peterson became the symbol of maternal homicide in the mass media and in the law books...it put a white face on the horrendous crime of maternal homicide," Lindsay Goldwert writes for CBS, "In reality, that face is actually young, and often, black." Goldwert points out that the deaths of women like Dawna Wright, pictured, who was shot by her boyfriend in June of last year, go largely unreported in comparison to a Laci Peterson or a Maria Lauterbach. Statistics show that black women have a maternal homicide risk about seven times that of white women. In addition, "Black women ages 25-29 are about 11 times more likely as white women in that age group to be murdered while pregnant or in the year after childbirth." [CBS News]

<![CDATA[Was Natalee Holloway Dumped Overboard While Still Alive?]]> Last night, 20/20 aired the much-hyped video footage of murder suspect Joran van der Sloot admitting involvement in Natalee Holloway's disappearance/the disposal of her body. The footage was captured by an Dutch ex-con named Patrick, who, in concert with investigative reporter Peter de Vries, rigged up a car with audio/video recording equipment in an effort to get van der Sloot to confess to being part of Holloway's murder on (hidden) camera. And the rest, as they say is (sordid) history: In the video, van der Sloot refers to Holloway a whore, describes a seizure she had, and says he wasn't even sure if she was dead before dumping her body in the ocean. Then he brags about the "big fat compensation check" he will receive when he sues Aruban officials for "emotional damages." Prosecutors in Aruba, however, say that the tape is admissible as evidence, and that they will most certainly use it. Clip above.

<![CDATA[Natalee Holloway's Mom On New Video: "Look What They've Done"]]> There may finally be an "end" to the long, sad saga involving the disappearance and probable murder of Alabama high school student Natalee Holloway: A Dutch journalist, PeterR. de Vries, has handed over videotape that reportedly shows murder suspect Joran van der Sloot admitting to being witness to both Natalee's murder and the disposal of her body. This morning's Today Show featured a sitdown with John Q. Kelly, an attorney representing Natalee's family, as well as exclusive video of Natalee's mother Beth Twitty's thoughts after viewing the van der Sloot video. Clip above.

<![CDATA[The Dating Shame]]> The lawyer who represents former cop Drew Peterson (a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy) pitched a grrrrreat idea to a Chicago radio station: A "Win A Date With Drew Peterson" contest. The host of the station's morning show offered to chaperone the date "to be on the safe side." So which is it? Is Peterson the worst guy in the world (technically he is still married, remember) or does he just have the worst attorney in the world? [Newser]

<![CDATA[Mom Of Missing, Pregnant Marine Says She Was Victim Of Sexual Assault By A Superior]]> Remember yesterday evening's speculation that missing pregnant 20-year-old Marine Maria Lauterbach's disappearance might have something to do with a sexual assault? Well documents have surfaced today quoting Maria's mother alleging that her daughter was the victim of sexual assault at the hands of a superior officer. To recap: Maria's family last heard from her on December 14; they reported her missing on December 19th after they were unable to reach her. Maria's cell phone was found on the side of a road near her military base, North Carolina's Camp Lejeune. There was "suspicious activity" on Lauterbach's bank account on December 24. Oh, and of course, Maria was scheduled to testify as a witness to some sort of incident that took place at Camp Lejeune.

In addition, Lauterbach wasn't just pregnant, she was almost to term. Her due date was January 8. Jacksonville's Sheriff Ed Brown told reporters, "You pray that she's alive." We certainly do.

<![CDATA[Drew Peterson Tells Dateline He Pampered Wife Stacy With Plastic Surgery]]>
This morning, the Today show ran a preview of Hoda Kotb's interview with Drew Peterson that's part of a Dateline report on the disappearance of his wife Stacy that airs tonight. In the clip above, Drew who is a suspect in her disappearance discusses how he pampered Stacy. He says he got her anything she wanted, like a boob job, a tummy tuck, braces, hair removal, Lasik eye surgery, referring to them as "repairs." You can tell by the look on her face that Hoda Kotb is like, Oh. My. God. You fucking ass. Hoda also calls Drew out for always speaking of Stacy in the past tense. But he's sticking to his story: She left him and the kids for another man, and that she was an emotional rollercoaster because of her menstrual cycle.

<![CDATA[As Another Woman Goes Missing, Two Others Get Justice]]> Another day, another slew of stories about missing white women. 21-year-old Leah Hickman, a student at Marshall University in West Virginia, has been missing since Saturday night. There are no leads in her disappearance, and her friends have created a Facebook page to help aid in the search for her. Her absence was noted when she missed her shift at Dress Barn on Saturday. (I am desperately trying to keep myself from making a joke about how she probably ran away to avoid another Saturday night at the Barn of Dresses, but I'm too classy for that.) In other news, an arrest has finally been made in the murder of Emily Sander. Emily's original disappearance received a lot of salacious press because of her foray into internet nudie pics. Israel Mireles, with whom Emily left a bar on the night of her death, is now in police custody.

And lastly, police officer Bobby Cutts, who has been in jail for the murder of his pregnant girlfriend Jessie Davis, admitted to killing her. Though Cutts originally plead not guilty, he confessed the murder to his high school friend, Myisha Ferrell. Ferrell has agreed to testify against Cutts. Jessie Davis was nearly nine months pregnant when she was killed.

<![CDATA["Missing Porn Star" Wasn't Even A Porn Star]]> It's been noted how much the media loves to pick up stories of missing women so long as they're white. Today it was reported that the bodies of both Latasha Norman (a black woman) and Emily Sander (a white woman) were discovered yesterday, and unsurprisingly, Emily's case had received much more attention in the days following her disappearance. And while the whole race aspect definitely has played a part here, I think that the real hook to her story was the whole "porn" thing. It added a dark seediness to the case that, as Jezebel's Jessica put it, would make her case perfect for Law and Order: SVU to rip from the headlines. The idea of her "secret life as a porn star" led many to jump to the conclusion that it must've had something to do with why she'd gone missing, because even if they don't want to admit it, people still think that women who engage in that sort of activity kinda have it coming. Oh except here's the thing: Emily wasn't a porn star.

The adult site that Emily ran before her death has since been removed, but in its place, friends have posted information about the man wanted for questioning in relation to the case. (Israel Mireles whose whereabouts are currently unknown was the last person to be seen with Emily, and when cops searched his motel room, they found it bloody and in disarray.)

But the site also notes that Emily was never really the "porn star" the media has made her out to be. She merely modeled nude on the internet, in solo setups. Also, she only began doing it about two months ago. Would anyone ever refer to women in Playboy as "porn stars"? Probably not. And surely, her photos were a lot dirtier than the watered down men's mag, but someone who has been showing their pussy on the internet for eight weeks isn't really a star.

But still, even if she'd made gonzo films of spit roasts, or shoving baseball bats up her ass, it doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day, porno is just a jobunconventional, sure, but still, just a job. Since when is murder an occupational hazard for holding down a legal job?

<![CDATA[Two Missing Women Found Too Late]]> There are some sad endings today for the stories of two separate missing women. 20-year-old Mississippi college student Latasha Norman who had been missing since Nov. 13 was found yesterday, after her ex-boyfriend led cops to her decomposing body. Her ex, Stanley Dwayne Cole, has been charged with murder. Also yesterday: the body of 18-year-old Emily Sander the missing college student whose case gained national attention because of her "secret double life" modeling nude on the internet as Zoey Zane was found in Kansas. The disappearance of Latasha Norman a black woman didn't receive nearly as much media attention as that of Sander or Stacy Peterson both white and Police Chief Malcolm McMillin, who's been heading up Norman's investigation thinks he knows why: "As far as the interest by the national media in the story, I think race probably had an impact."

<![CDATA[Missing Teenager Is Also Internet Porn Phenomenon]]> In a story that's sure to be poached for an upcoming episode of Law and Order SVU, missing Kansas teen Emily Sander has been outed as internet porn star Zoey Zane. On her website (which seems to have been taken down), Emily/Zoey describes herself as a "a spunky little teen with a super sexy side," who started shooting homemade porn "as soon as I turned 18." Emily was last seen this past Friday, clad in a "Don't Mess With Texas" t-shirt and leaving a bar near her school with Israel Mireles, whom she had just met that evening. According to the AP, Mireles' motel room was searched the next day, and it was "found to appear in great disarray, and a large quantity of blood was found in the room...Bed clothing was found to be missing. The police were called."

When Emily first started out as Zoey Zane, only her close friends knew about her alter ego, but over Thanksgiving she broke the news to her parents. Her boyfriend broke up with her when she told him she as doing porn, and her grandmother, Shirley Sander, was predictably outraged, telling reporters, "We have never heard anything like this and truthfully I don't believe it."

Zoey's emergence on the DIY-porn scene was not unnoticed. On October 31st, our brother site Fleshbot featured Zoey in a Halloween-themed striptease (link NSFW) with a couple of friends dressed (and undressed) as characters from the Wizard of Oz, and her likeness was featured on several other porn-centric sites. Authorities are investigating to see if there is any link between Zoey's semi-secret career and her disappearance.
