Why is it that truly amazing people never seem to recognize what they do as monumental and catalysts for change and action? It's like when a foreigner who speaks perfect English insists they are not fluent. Their humility is incredible.
Aww, may her soul rest in peace. Her album was the first album I ever got from my dad, brings back a lot of memories. This is really sad though, first Brenda then Miriam; we have Mandisa to carry on though.
@CreoleSugar: I gasped while making coffee this morning, listening to this on NPR. I was so upset. minisparks was like, 'mama, what is it?' I said this lady, whom I loved and was a great musician, passed away.
She said, 'but she did good things when she was alive, right? They have all her music on CD, right? She's always here!'
@spikenard: That version of Nkosi Sikele makes me tear up every time. Especially when I think about how it was performed in Zimbabwe, before Mugabe destroyed that beautiful country.
@confusedforahotsecond loves me some Renegade: You're right. At least the opposition is getting its foot in the door. I was in Zim last year and it was so upsetting. Frankly, I'm just hoping Mugabe will die. He's 84, he's done enough damage. It's time for him to join the ancestors.
It is so sad, they were talking about her on NPR this morning and played clips of several songs and I thought - wow, I had forgotten how many of her songs I love. It was such a shame she couldn't make her show in Brooklyn this summer.

Joseph's face was black as night
The pale yellow moon shone in his eyes
His path was marked
By the stars in the southern hemisphere
And he walked his days
Under african skies
This is the story of how we begin to remember
This is the powerful pulsing of love in the vein
After the dream of falling and calling your name out
These are the roots of rhythm
And the roots of rhythm remain
In early memory
Mission music
Was ringing round my nursery door
I said take this child, lord
From tucson arizona
Give her the wings to fly through harmony
And she wont bother you no more
This is the story of how we begin to remember
This is the powerful pulsing of love in the vein
After the dream of falling and calling your name out
These are the roots of rhythm
And the roots of rhythm remain
Josephs face was black as night
And the pale yellow moon shone in his eyes
His path was marked
By the stars in the southern hemisphere
And he walked the length of his days
Under african skies
