it's easy to say that the peoples' campaign was inspired by mad men, but plenty of photo shoots that lionize that style period pre-date the show. the brad & angelina photo spread for "w" is a good example.
It may be the queerest of the queer, but this campaign isn't garbage. I still get happy feet when I see everything illuminated like this. Just a (hob)bit.
@cailizma: I think they're great for basics if you fit their archetype, but their menswear runs incredibly short (Target's does as well from time to time, but not consistently like Gap), which has stopped me from shopping there. Having said that, I love their holiday ads for being cheerful and benign, and their choice of nonthreatening and unsexualized spokesmodels is a boon for those of us who don't like to be intimidated by models (the year they had Liz Phair dressed down in cardigans and sensible skirts after her Avril Lavigne-esque sexualized "girl" downfall a few years prior I nearly died).
It'll be neat to see the company get "more modern" though.
I think Elijah looks fantastic in the ad. I don't know what it is about him, but he rocks that nerdy/yuppie thing so well. Also, I don't really get Man Men from it at all.
@Penny: Good question. But I'm also pretty excited--Gap advertising is ok, and it's consistent, but Crispin is a creative in a way that blows my mind at times. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the account.
Perhaps stylist Robert Verdi has been denied tickets to fashion shows because the Fashion World doesn’t want the rest of us to realise they actually have gay people working in it, let alone gay men. Or it could just be that he isn’t important enough to warrant one right now. As Heidi says, one moment you're in, the next you're out.
I'm kind of disappointed in Tim Gunn after those Lohan comments. I'm not a huge Lindsay fan, but didn't he just say what a pleasure it was to have her on PR? It just seems kind of below him to talk bad about people.
@katie.scarlett.o'hara: I don't blame him. It comes across harsh but fashion people are always too blunt. Ungaro replaced a talented designer who has trained and worked in the industry for years with a celebrity who is not known for her work ethic. It is really insulting to fashion designers, etc to see this kind of spectacle.
@bitchney: I know they got rid of the designer, but is Lohan replacing him? I thought she had some other, more random role. Like some sort of promoter.
@cate3710: I am sure she won't do more than be late to / blow off meetings and smoke cigarettes. They have a "designer" who will do all of the work while this trainwreck gets the credit. I would expect this from Bebe or something, not at a venerable fashion house.
Just goes to show you how ridic the copyrights on clothing designs can be. Its a goddamn sneaker. New Balance didn't reinvent the wheel with that look.
@bluebears: I don't know - that particular edition is THE iconic New Balance sneaker. And charging $590 for a sneaker deserves some sort of punishment anyway.
@dreamweave: heh. yeah. But if you look at saucony and nike they also have varying throwback designs that look pretty similar as well. There's just not that much to reinvent when it comes to a sneaker.
@bluebears: Well, and it's really hard to get a copyright in a pattern or clothing design - which is why knock offs of fashion are so readily available. I wonder if NB has worked hard to protect this one, giving it some cache on the legal front. Otherwise, it's a color scheme and a fabric choice and I have no doubt the LV one is a crap running shoe.

I'm still too fat for Uniqlo clothes though, curse them.

Furthermore, he does not "rip off" the other designer; he is inspired by him or her.
You've got to take into account the presence of a muse in fluttering golden gauze guiding his hand.
