@ItchykooParker: I can't do twee. This reminds me of that South Park episode where Cartman tries to knock himself unconscious so he can have a dream about the founding fathers and get out of actually reading a book.

@bleedingmouths: No, but I will say this--my predictions of my not liking something based on a preview are very, very rarely proven wrong...

I love Jane Austen, but I wish the modern age would just let her be. She had a pretty good grasp of the realities of being a woman in those days, and while I'm in no position to speak for the dead, I think she'd see the modern era as a vast improvement. She wrote very knowing, witty social commentary, and it's a bit disheartening to see her constantly reduced to romance, rich idle men, and floaty muslin frocks.

@small-fox: Seconded. I get very frustrated when I hear people describe her books as "19th century chick-lit." (This goes for the Brontë's, too.)

@small-fox: What I found interesting about Lost in Austen was that they acknowledged this - how alone Amanda was, how powerless the women were, and how (SPOILER ALERT) Darcy couldn't marry her because she wasn't "a maid."

Sorry to be pedantic but the TV series was made by another UK TV channel ITV - not the BBC.

And I thought the series was alright - -not great but not awful.

@kit10indublin: I caught most of the series by accident over Christmas and quite enjoyed it. Not as much as Pride and Prejudice A&E, but it was a fun watch nonetheless.

I bonded with my Australian friend over his novels -- not many people I know have read him. I'm glad to see you have!

@lolowyo: I think of that possibility with a mixture of hope and fear. On the one hand, what I'd really love to see are books 2-3, but the first one is the most "real world"....hmm...

Erk. I watched some of Lost in Austen, with my mother, when I was home at Christmas. It epitomised all the worst characteristics of "chick flick" - or chick miniseries, I guess. We got a lot of snark mileage out of it, though.

Zombies would certainly have improved things.
