hey everybody, long time reader, first time poster. ha.
seriously, I loved reading these posts about michelle O.
my mother is emotionally invested in her in a way I've never seen in my 41 years. this at a time in her life when she's allowing herself to become isolated and a little quity. I am greatly thankful for someone who has broken through to her, and your posts choked me up a bit. I'm gonna read through some of them with her asap.
@ArnoldJulisa: Welcome to commenting sweetie! I like the notion of generations of women bonding over Michelle Obama. In some ways, it really is a better world, isn't it.
On a side note, I have friends (who did not vote for Barack-- go figure) that diss Michelle's style with a vitrol reserved only for Octomoms. I was stunned. It's the most petty thing I've witnessed from them, and they aren't underminers/style-snarkers at all. Or weren't till now.
I'm countered that it's not that SHE'S claiming to be some fashion icon. She's an iconic woman whose fashion sense is being examined and lauded. Two different things.
I'm not sure they heard me, tho. This Vogue cover's gonna irk them something awful. Heheh, too bad!
@jenalicious: I told this story last night, but it feels so relevant, I'm going to tell it again!
Last night, I had to take my son to the store to get some stuff for school. As we waited in line, I noticed him looking at the cover of that gossip magazine with the two pictures of Jessica Simpson and the tagline "Bullied for her weight."
I let him take it in for a minute or so and then said "What do you think about that?" He said "About what?" I said "The fact that some people are saying that in this picture, she looks fat." He laughed and said "Anyone who says that is just stupid." Then I asked him "Which do you think is a worse insult? Stupid, fat, or annoying?" He said "Well, I think it would be 'stupid'."
Of course I'd focus on the non-fashion aspect of a Vogue article, but I'm geeked-the-F-out that Mrs. Obama wants to bring multi-culutural artists of a younger generation into the White House. Spoken word? Open Mic-Night at the Oval Office, y'all.
I just like the idea that a lot of the great musicians, dancers, artists that I appreciate might get this level of validation and exposure in our highest office.
(Also, the filipina chef is still there from the last admin.! Woot!)
I just love that across the top of Jezebel right this minute, three of the four pictures in the banner are: Michelle Obama. And the fourth is a puppeh. The world is, briefly, right.
And this! "If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves..." Oh, Michelle, thank you! My little girl is growing up now, and I so want this is the world!
"NO! No! Miss Hussein Obama! No! Your Daughters, with they're commie names are citisins of Amurrka, not some citicens of the World. What kind of UN librell propogandhi is that?!? You hate this country don't YoU!. God bless the USA! USA!"
...
Oh, I'm sorry, I was possessed by the illiterate spirit of the red states there. My apologies. What a charming and elegant woman, bravo.
I love that she's aware of the awesome draw the White House has on children. Also love how good a mother she is, as evidenced by her plans to stay as involved as possible in her daughters' everyday lives, even though she's going to be stretched pretty thin at times. Also love how down to earth and genuine she seems. Also love looking at her and hearing her speak. Basically she rocks my world. She's everything I want to be, someday. And I do find the Kennedy comparisons appropriate, because there really are quite a few similarities here. A dazzling, brilliant man and his beautiful young family who've captivated so many people and pretty much swept us off our feet. Not to mention the almost palpable love and respect flowing between her and her husband. That's something I think we all want from a partnership, and they are a perfect example.
Oh God my head is sploding from all teh love. Excuse me while I wipe my brain(s!) particles off the screen.
UGH I cannot stand reading anything that man writes. Overuse of hyphens, back-assward sentence structure, dripping with pretension. "What Michelle Obama is less focused on-in direct inverse proportion to the focus of the public-is fashion. Which isn't to say that she doesn't appreciate good clothes. Or that the fashion choices of a woman whose image will shortly be-or already is-among the most recognizable in the entire world aren't iconic." Whaaaaaaa? Aren't direct proportion and inverse proportion different from each other? Sorry, Living Legend ALT, I don't want to read your writing and you can't dress me either. Ms. Obama, I like. :)
@Leucadia: I haven't seen the rest of the interview, but if I'm not mistaken, ALT is using "direct" - even though he probably should have used the "ly" adverb - to modify the adverb "inverse".
If you're having difficulty with the subordinate clause used as an insert, please consider the possibility that may be a style preference of yours and/or that it's your attention span - as opposed to his syntax - that's at issue here.
"First and foremost, I wear what I love. That's what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion."
PREACH ON. Fashion is about what makes you feel good, and if you feel good, you look good.
@dripdrop: I also like that they put her in clothes that she could actually really wear for the shoots. It's not all fancy, special occasion stuff that you'd never see on the street.

what a world it would be if the focus was always turned off of someone's appearance, and more towards their personality/intellect.
