I cant help but think of the SNL skit where fake John McCain references "this-guy" aka fake Obama from that screen shot. However, Im sure real Obama knows that his "this-guy" is the shit, the cats PJs, the bees knees... I could go on forever.
I disagree that everyone deserves their own Obama. The people who deserve it are those who are willing to work at it and ALSO be the spouse they would want to marry, i.e. be as respectful, forgiving, kind and gracious as you want your spouse to be to you. Only when you are willing to be that person as well do you deserve it.
@Beets.Go.On is the Fat Yogini: Right on. These mutually respectful and loving relationships are earned by both parties involved. Although, some people who are willing to put in the work and build that kind of marriage discover too late that their partner is not willing to do the same. And making that wrong choice unknowingly doesn't make you undeserving.
@deeemer: Ditto. It makes me crazy. Usually I just stop talking and give whoever interrupted me The Eye, and stay silent until they ask what's wrong. Then I say, "You interrupted me." And wait until they apologize and feel bad. And then they usually stop doing it.
@deeemer: You know, I feel the same way. I think when a guy cuts me off, I take it as a power play or sign of disregard, when a woman does it I think she's just being overly eager to get something out there.
My hang-up probably spends from spending my formative (career) years in a firm with all men who didn't really care about what I had to say. Ahh issues. Apparently you're never to old to acquire more!
@deeemer: Nope, in fact mine were acquired in finance! Glad to know I'm not the only one though. The funny thing is, I had *excellent* experiences in school. Always felt I got attention and respect. Then once I starting working, BAM. I actually read "Mars and Venus in the workplace" because I thought I was doing something wrong. Turns out it wasn't me - it was everyone else, but how are you going to tell that to people who are a few dozens rungs ahead of you on the career ladder?
I think it's kind of sad that seeing a couple with what appears to be a normal, healthy relationship is such a big deal. Is it so rare that people think this is the unattainable?
@Tippi Hedren: I honestly can't think of one couple I know personally that's as seemingly functional. Then again, just about every marriage in my family has ended in divorce.
@Tippi Hedren: Right? I don't live in some kind of surreal fairy tale, and yet I have many friends who have found a mate who is kind, respectful, and completely loving. I find it hard to believe that my friends are the only genuinely nice guys in all of North America. I should be playing the lottery.
@Tippi Hedren: My parents have a marriage like the Obamas, so I've always thought it was imminently attainable. That said, many people grew up without this as a model. I can't imagine how they would come to learn that it can, in fact, be a reality with all we see in Hollywood and Washington. And I guess Florida, thanks to Mr. Woods and his harem.
Thank god for the Obamas. Their example will singlehandedly do more for the institution of marriage than a shelf full of self help books and years of family counseling.
@Julia Allison: I agree that their marriage is a positive influence. You see, the thing is, I had anything but a positive example of how relationships should be--and still.
I don't know why that quote from Michelle cracks me up so much. It sounds like she got sucked into a Sex & the City marathon on TBS, momentarily blanked on alternative forms of interactions between female friends, and wanted to suggest shopping and cosmos with Jill before thinking better of it and just sticking with shopping. Personally, I'd prefer drinks with them, because then I could just pick their brains for hours.
My mom tapes newspaper articles on the bathroom mirror, too. For a while, she was cutting them out of the paper and mailing them to me. She has slowly adapted to the notion of emailing URLs to me instead.
Didn't you hear that Mr. Berlusconi has generously offered to sign off on the augmentations of women under 18? Of course, he'll need to personally inspect her breasts first... just to make sure she understands the risks, of course.

I did not like the
First part, but your overall
Point is great. Hearted.

Random, confusing
Haiku- I cannot tell if
You are insulting
12/14/09
Trying not to be.
I disagreed with your first
Line, because I think
That everyone should
Have a nearly perfect spouse.
We all deserve one.
(Whether or not we,
In truth, DO deserve that spouse---
If that makes some sense.)
But, I also think
That you go on to make a
Very cogent point.
Overall I think
You are completely correct.
We all have to be
The spouse we want to
Have that other person be.
Tit for tat, you know.

My comment in Haiku, so
I responded in Haiku.
I am sorry if
That is obnoxious to you,
But please don't threadjack.
