    I am endlessly flabbergasted by the fact that anyone believes Charlyne Yi is in her 30s. I'm not sure if its because we are so used to seeing late 20 somethings play high school students or if it is because so many people think Asian women have the magically ability to not age. I looked her up months ago and didn't believe her fake birthday.

    @ericacartman: I watched Gilmore Girls and I think Lane passing as a high school student has a lot to do with costuming and the fact that it is tv. And also probably the fact that a lot of Americans don't know many Asians. When I heard the actress who played Lane was 30, I wasn't really surprised. I would have guessed she was late 20s, not 15.

    Maybe I'm an unusually good judge of age though.

    man I am so sick of addiction intervention shows. it's horrifying/disgusting and all fun and games until the addict you know fucks up your life and then it's not just a fun tv show anymore. *eyeroll*

    i saw a classmate on there, as the family member of an addict. i wanted to approach them and offer sympathy but had no idea how.

    EW reports that Jude Law is expecting his fourth child this fall, "following a relationship last year." A rep adds, "no other statements will be made."

    That sounds like the answer to the Blind Item this week. Rachel McAdam's sister, perhaps.

    Oh and Brad, that would be funny, if it weren't true about a lot of other actors.

    @TransFat: My FIL's YiaYia was the same way. When he brought my MIL to meet her, MIL was very thin and YiaYia fed her all afternoon. The only way to get along with that woman was to have at least two helpings, preferably three.

    I understand what the Mad Men producers mean when they want a "softer" body, but right now I'm working on accessioning a large vintage collection of clothing, and I must say the sizes are tiny! It's a rare day when we come across a dress with a waist size above 23", and the other measurements are equally petite. It's quite fascinating, really.

    @CrankyC: Also, keep in mind that just like the department store sales rack with only only XS and Size 0s left, many vintage clothes you see only still exist because no one wore them - or they weren't worn very often. What is leftover is not neccesarily indicative of median or mean sizes.

    @nerdycellist: That's very true, otherwise there would have been a lot of naked people in the 50's and early 60's. That, combined with the undergarments, means that a lot of that we still have from that era are quite small or short. Women also were more likely to get their physical activity from walking a lot than from a gym, so fewer bulky muscles up top meant a different shape. And, the fact is, we are, on average, a bit taller and broader than the Silent Generation, who grew up during the Depression and WWII.

    @CrankyC: They could also want softer arms in those sheath wiggle dresses. Women back then, in a general sense, didn't work out and have definition and prominent muscle tone. So, soft doesn't have to equal fat.

    @CrankyC: I always think of what mature women looked like on shows like Leave It To Beaver and The Donna Reed Show. Think, slim arms with little muscle definition, smooth shoulders without a prominent clavicle (but still a hollow at the throat), full breasts, a small waist, full hips, and smooth but full thighs--not at all what we look like now. If you had a little tummy from having children, you could hide it by belting your dress a little higher and it would be under your full skirt, which would still show off a shapely calf and ankle. Mad Men is set a little later, but this preoccupation with the absolutely flat stomach and well-defined arms, that's all us.

    @CrankyC:Hmm, I guess I didn't word this very well. I'm working in a museum right now with a large clothing collection, so those are the vintage clothes I am looking at. I understand this is not representative of all women during the time period, but some were very petite - so I guess I was just thrown off by the "gain weight, gain weight, gain weight" order. Back then, as now, women were a whole range of sizes.

    That was a rather sincere quote from him, but if you check out Ken Levine's blog (kenlevine.blogspot.com), he's very funny. He's a former sitcom writer, and he talks a lot about the behind the scenes, how to be funny, calling minor-league games, and growing up in the 60's. That particular post was titled "Why I Hate Katherine Heigl... again"

    @Ailatan: Yeah, I actually thought that they named him Cruz because they were living in Spain at the time.I've met my fair share of male and female people named Cruz, but of my favorite neighbor was a "Crucita", and I love that diminutive.
