The dress didn't make Michelle look fat, per se, but it did add some unflattering width to her lower half. The blood-on-night coloring didn't help matters.

I don't think it made her look fat, but I fully expect US Magazine to do "HOW MICHELLE GOT HER BODY BACK AFTER THE ELECTION!" any minute now.

Not that she ever lost it, really. Not that it would matter if she gained five pounds during a stressful election (I don't think she did). But for US, it would be a dream cover because it combines weight loss and the Obamas! Squee!

@raysanni: But there's are ways to say not nice things in nice ways, like "I thought that dress wasn't her best choice" and leave at that without the use of "fat." That's actually the only thing that bothers me, that word. It's so childish and unimaginative. A teaspoon of tact would go a long way.

@rosasparks: i still don't see the reason for the outrage. were bijou to have said that it made michelle look "fatter" as opposed to "fat" would it have been better? As pilgrimsoul said above, i think it's one thing to call someone fat, it's another to say that in one specific outfit, that person looked fat. I personally don't think that Michelle looked fat at all, but i don't think this is as bad as a lot of you all are saying.

@Samanthrax: and on that point i agree with you completely. i just don't think it warrants the outrage coming from a lot of the commenters. calling bijou a bitch? wanting to pull her hair? it's really not that serious. i don't think people read the full interview. she's not slighting michelle obama for anything other than a poor fashion choice. it's not sexist or anything else. it was a (relatively) poorly worded statement. not worth the outrage.

I don't feel outrage, other than the usual level of outrage I feel at people who spend their lives talking to the media but never think before they speak (or at least don't seem to). That drives me beserk. It's a celebrity's job, in part, to not sound like an arsehole in the press. Many need to get better at it.

@raysanni: Well, personally, I think the rage you are seeing here speaks of bigger issues. Women are bombarded with off the cuff comments on a daily basis. They are very hard to ignore, and a lot of them just absolutely reek of a seperatist attitude, and the frustration from those comments just kind of culminates and then anyone who says something regretable is going to get a proverbial lashing. I guess I just think it speaks of bigger issues, particularly dealing with weight.

@Samanthrax: agreed. i just wish the lashings were reserved for more pressing situations. if not for pilgrimsoul, i prob would not have commented on this posting b/c it's so easy to be intimidated by the commenters in here and decide not to be a part of a legitimate discussion about real issues. every small thing is immediately sexist without further discussion. calling bijou a bitch (besides that actually being sexist, or at least girl on girl misdemeanor) doesnt do anything to address the separatist sentiments u're referring to, but rather it only fuels them.

and, michelle obama is a fashion icon. that may not be entirely her choice, as women who are famous aren't given much say in that regard. but i don't understand how judging the sartorial choices of a woman who intended to make a sartorial statement in a magazine devoted to analyzing the sartorial choices of other prominent women is the same as undermining the validity of a truly intelligent woman solely because she is a woman or because she doesnt have the perfect body or whatever. this is a long comment, but sometimes jez really gets my goat this way. ugh.

@raysanni: It's true. Lashings around here are most often reserved for trivial matters and I played into that here too. But, part of the problem in the Jez comments, IMO, is that when it is a real issue - discussing disordered eating, right to choose, feminism broadly speaking, even comments by political pundits - dissenters are often so resoundingly harped on that the trivial matters are some of the few issues where actual debate occurs.

And I agree that this is bigger than Bijou saying something off the cuff and poorly conceived. Calling someone "fat" for a sartorial choice shouldn't be the easy go-to. We need to break the habit.

@raysanni: Well, I don't think anyone in here is going to go apeshit over Bijou's comment, but I understand what you're saying- that's why the comments are a great place to express differing opinions. Furthermore, you should never feel intimidated to the point where your opinion is quelled into nonexistence. You might get the aforementioned proverbial lashing, but it's important to stand up for your opinions, even if it's the unpopular one- just as long as it's stated in a respectable manner, which brings us back to Bijou's comments, which were anything but.
