Bull shit. If he wanted his baby as much as he's claiming to he could easily get a mediator in there to negotiate visitation. If not, he could sue for joint custody. Or maybe he's not being allowed to see his baby because he pays no child support. The time he spent interviewing with Tyra could have been spent looking for a job to support the child he made.

@Green Goth Brit Chick - Alternat-evE: i have actually felt pretty bad for bristol since the day it was announced she was pregnant. imagine being seventeen and 5 months pregnant. it's hard enough facing high school like that, let alone THE WHOLE FREAKING COUNTRY. she didn't ask for any of this fame (or infamy). if i were her, i would loathe my mother for putting her career ahead of my well-being. consequently, this is the primary argument behind my belief that sarah palin has no soul.

@so much honey: I'm glad I'm not the only one. My old boss used to refer to people as "Trailer trash" or "white trash" all the time usually in reference to someone who wasn't particularly educated or articulate and it always made me feel a little sick. I wish I had called her on it and asked what about these people made her think they couldn't possibly have anything to contribute to the world.

All this is not to say that I don't think badmouthing your child/grandchild's family on Tyra isn't ridiculously tacky, of course.

@cerebration: See, I agree with not being cruel people if they are not particularly educated or articulate, but I think "trash" goes a lot further than that. I think the term implies certain behavior more than anything; you can go to the best schools and have a lot of cash and still behave like trash. Being ridiculously tacky, bad-mouthing people in your inner circle publicly, and fame-seeking are all "trashy" things to do.

@LaFemme: I guess to me, calling someone trash implies that they should be disposed of, that they're sub-human and inferior. It also seems like "trashy" and "white trash" have slightly different connotations. I've just heard the term "white trash" used to describe people who weren't born with certain advantages too many times.

@cerebration: Yeah, I hate the term. I think it's classist and also racially weird. a) no people are trash b) "white" trash, as opposed to what? If we just called people trashy, would the default assumption be that they were not white? I think there's something built into the phrase that assumes that we expect trashy people to be not white, or white people to be not trashy.

@cerebration: I don't mind "trash" so much because I think it's an apt description of some people. However, I do think it often carries a lot of classist assumptions with it when people do use it, so I'd just as soon avoid it and come up with other ways to dump on people I find repulsive.

However, I hate the term "white trash." It is so so racist on top of being classist.

You know, as a teenage mom myself, this kind of stuff pisses me off. We're not all like this, but if you watch any television talk show you wouldn't know that. Some of us finish school, go to college and have family members who love us and our kids. Yes, we have made irresponsible decisions, and yes it is a hard road sometimes, but we do work it out every once in a while.

@southernbelle: I too am friending you. In high school, I did a profile in our school magazine of the only (that I know of) teen mother in our class, and when I was talking to her, I was shocked by how dedicated, sincere, and amazing she was. She worked harder than anyone I've ever met. I know she went to college after high school, but I'm not sure what after that. She was one of the strongest people I've ever spoken to.

Kudos to you for making it work a hell of a lot better than Bristol.

This is my sister, except she has a two year old. It's absolutely amazing to sit back and watch, that poor boy :(. My sister has moved that little man more times in a year then most people move in their entire life. She drops him off for days on end without calling or coming to pick him up to go and do lord knows what. It breaks my heart. I have a daughter just a few short months younger and it's crazy to see the difference in parenting styles. I was a single mother and have raised the shit out of my girl, and the thought of moving her or dropping her off somewhere for how ever many days I want doesn't even cross my mind.

I too, think that young moms tend to get a pretty bad rap. But, trust, there are a million great ones out there. Just because you're young doesn't automatically make you a terrible mother.
