Here I thought that the best way to start a riot was to inform the public about rising health costs and how the insurance industry profits from their misery and wants to take away the possibility of universal health care.
Turns out, all I had to do was say, Hey guys, buying you all free coats! Psych! #fightclub
@morninggloria: It depends on where you are. In some locales, saying "Hey! Did you know the president's a black Muslim who wants to implant a chip in you so he can send a feed to his Muslim friends and also force you to kill your grandma?" also works.
And if you run out of breath saying all that, just yell "Socialism!" #fightclub
In a cartoon world, sans misery (the mental illness that caused the incident, the annoyed employees, the financial fallout, the riot, etc) this story is absolutely epic and I want to do this right now. [jezebel.com]
@SarahMC: I have a feeling not even the worst Black Friday of my life could compare what they must have gone through. Yeah, I had pissy and annoying customers who didn't like having to stand in line for more than five minutes, but they (usually) didn't throw things and trash the place... or need crowd control. #fightclub
@wtfox?!: OK, see, at this point I think it's better to not even mention the comments because when someone says not to read the comments I HAVE to read the comments. #fightclub
@wtfox?!: Oh my gawd, I should have heeded your advice. Great, now I feel bad for this ill woman and think every commenter at the Daily News is a raging bigot. Breathe, calm blue ocean, calm blue ocean, serenity now... #fightclub
@wtfox?!: After reading the comments below yours here, I refuse to read the comments now. I can't have my head exploding this close to Friday. #fightclub
What kind of people would just believe what a stranger says and expect to be entitled to free stuff? These are grown adults, and this story is disgusting and full of greed. #fightclub
As a Columbus resident, I'd just like to point out that this woman has a history of mental health issues, and according to her daughter, this is the manic state she's in when she is off her medication. The NYDailyNews article just gleamed right over that point with only a mention of a mental health evaluation. #fightclub
I don't know what is more sad, this deluded woman in need of attention or the shoppers who rioted, stole merchandise and were calling everyone they knew to take advantage of this woman's offer. #fightclub
@I, Zombie Normal: Yeah, there's something sort of distasteful about "Ohh a mistake that benefits me! I'm going to screw the establishment and tell everyone I know to do the same!"
It's like when a gas station has an error and lowers its prices to say, a $1. People start lining up and calling everyone because they think the gas companies "have it coming." Maybe so, but Exxon will not pay for this. The store owner will. And to get mad and tear apart the store because you think you're "owed" something that isn't coming to you is just disgusting.
@lalaland13: Yeah, I remember last year Target mistakenly advertised $300+ carseats for like $99, and people ordered them like mad. Then when Target wouldn't sell them at that price, people pitched fits and threatened to sue, etc. I have less sympathy for Target, but here's the thing: you aren't harmed by not getting a steal! #fightclub
Thing is, the whole unfortunate kerfuffle started because Burlington Coat Factory shoppers are generally 8th graders who have just had their first taste of Shirley Jackson. #fightclub
I'm a bad person, I already know that, but I kind of want to do the same thing. Except I'll go to Wal-Mart because I hate that place. I'd love to see a riot there. #fightclub

@telecomic the thoughtful red panda: Hell no. I know you're joking, but a Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death last Black Friday. And that was WITHOUT this kind of extra motivation to riot. #fightclub
@cate3710: oh wow...that's right. Was that this past year or a couple of years ago? Your comment just jogged my memory about how some stores were going to avoid the stampede-type openings in `08.
I should have remembered that. Thanks for being our better conscious, Cate3710 #fightclub
@cate3710: I went to the mall last Black Friday and upon arrival we were told to not go near the Sears because an employee had been assaulted when a few customers had discovered that some of the items weren't on sale for the amount they had thought. I second your advice and appreciate your rationale. #fightclub
On a happier and unrelated note, I love that all our avatars are cute animals. A kitty, a red panda, and a tree frog, all hanging out. Nice. #fightclub
@SarahMC: I really, really, really hope not - but it's certainly a possibility. I had a discussion on this subject with a friend the other day and he argued that the economy's a lot better than it was this same time last year. He neglected to realize that unemployment is way up and a lot of people's jobs are still on the line. Being the ever optimist, I just hope that everyone can wake up and realize that money ≠happy holidays... #fightclub
@SarahMC: Well a lot more people have lost their jobs, so there is that. Either way I am sticking to my practice of not going anywhere near the stores that day.
P.S. Cite me some examples of people being more panicky, OK? They're the EXCEPTION, not the rule, and I will back that up with some purely anecdotal evidence!! (I still haven't let that thread go.) #fightclub
@SarahMC: I could see that for some of the massive sales that Best Buy, Walmart, etc... will have, selling laptops for 300 dollars or HDTVs for 200 - people who have tightened their Christmas budgets will go for the low-priced stuff even more.
I could also see it go the other way, where some folks will go "forget the gifts, let's go out to dinner or have a nice brunch instead." #fightclub
@telecomic the thoughtful red panda: It seems like no matter how bad the economy gets, some people cannot have a happy holiday unless they have x number of presents under the tree (either for themselves or their kids). They may not have jobs but they WILL get a deal on a 1 million inch television. #fightclub
Oh, I'll gladly go off meds while pregnant, so long as someone throws money at me so I don't have to work. Because I won't be able to. Not only would I be beyond a wreck, but the only way out of it would be talk therapy several times a week. Neither one's conducive to steady employment. So the kid will either have birth defects, or will have a broke, depressed mother. Win-win!
This whole topic makes me scared and angry, because it's coming up on kid-having time and I'm damned no matter what I do. All I know is, I'm tracking down one of those high-risk perinatal physicians, and possibly a prenatal psychiatrist, if they have those. There has got to be a balance of risks here that I can live with. Even though I'm sure there are going to be more scare pieces on how it's got to be either/or.
They are talking about Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD), which range in severity. I was born with one that healed on its own when I was 8, but I had to see a cardiologist regularly as a kid, and had to take penicillin before going to the dentist, etc. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=11066
I assume by "hole in the heart" you mean patent foramen ovale. If so, then technically all babies have a "hole in the heart" that "closes on its own" when the lungs first inflate. So maybe a more accurate way of saying this would be "delayed closing of the foramen ovale" since implying that there is a "hole" in the baby's heart that wouldn't otherwise be there also implies long-term complications associated with such a "hole" and scar tissue, etc.
