    When I was 19 my brother and sister tried to convince me that my brother only had one ball and made me feel bad for laughing about it. They kept saying stuff like "he can still function..." and that I shouldn't laugh. They were so dead serious that I believed them...

    BI#2 sounds like SJ and RR, but I don't think this is what Sandra Bullock had in mind when she was counseling him about couples having to spend quality time together in order to make a marriage work (see yesterday's Dirt Bag).

    My sister tricked me into believing that my Care Bear was moving in different places around the room because whenever I returned to the room, it would be in a different spot. I was too naive at six to think she was moving it herself.

    In a family of eight kids, my brothers and sisters convinced me, the youngest, that I was adopted. I still believe I am not related to them in any way, shape or form.

    @kookla: Haha, I totally did that to my youngest brother. There are 4 sibs and all our names begin with the letter M, except his, which starts with a B. I told him that was proof positive that he was adopted. Of course, now he looks like the spitting image of our father!

    I'm not crazy about the persistent belief that any woman with any success in music is clearly the product of some smart man.

    @lisas: sure, maybe it was her. Good decision all the way around. And I do not believe for a second that a `good man is behind every successful woman,` not for a second. I guess I fell into the trap into believing a lot of other people are controlling B`s career and life right now given past issues ... I think that`s partly true. Anyway, the basic sentiment is good for her. Thanks for the additional insight.

    I hear ya Zooey. My older brother convinced me I was adopted and I believed it for yeeeeeeeeeeears. Even though i totally look like mum, I still have the odd stab of doubt. Elder siblings!

    @joq8: Ha! I'm the youngest out of five siblings and I've been told that I was adopted, too! Problem is, I don't really look like my mom, so that made it worse. Ugh! The things they made me believe!

    @ClementinedeWinter: My mom grew up in south Florida in the sixties, and had relatively dark skin. My Aunt and Uncle had her convinced she was a Cuban baby left on the doorstep, and communism was passed down like hair color, and no matter how hard she tried to be a good American, she was always going to be a pinko Cuban Castro lover.

    @joq8: My sister told me I was adopted and I believed her since I was the only blonde in the family. She presented good evidence. Later, of course, I started looking more like my parents and I eventually realized I had inherited my dad's deformed pinky toes. Then she went too far and made the claim that I was adopted from the Indian reservation and our house was built on an Indian graveyard. That's when she totally lost me.

    My husband convinced his younger brother that they had a third brother, Peter, that had been born between the two of them. But Peter had misbehaved, been mysteriously killed, and buried him in the backyard. My BIL believed this for YEARS.

    @kentuckienne: I convinced my sister (the baby of the family) that we had a younger brother named Bobby. Bobby was sweet and funny and cool, but we all knew Grace would get jealous, so Bobby lived in a secret chamber under my bed during the day and came out at night and we all played with him and had fun after she went to sleep. I cannot TELL YOU the number of times I found her under my bed looking for the door to the chamber.
