Similarly, until someone on here explicitly pointed out the comparison between the word "tranny" as meant for transperson with "tranny" as meant for transmission I never would have drawn the comparison. It just seemed like a much easier way than saying "transexual/transgendered/" etc.

My point isn't that it isn't an insult, just that a persons use of it, isn't necessarily steeped in a desire to be insulting and that those who seek to make others aware should be gentle with those they are informing (not that people are being mean).
