Beyonce's new movie "Obsessed" looks like a cocoa-colored reindition of "Fatal Attraction", with a dash of "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" and a twist of "Trois" served hot, steamy, and crappy. The only thing it's missing is a dead bunny floating in a pot of boiling water.

And strangely, I cannot imagine Beyonce even in all of her "fierceness" actually (believably) opening up a can of whoop ass on anybody...like, ever.

I mean... doesn't pretty much everyone have oral herpes? It was my understanding that even most people who don't get cold sores have the virus, and just aren't susceptible to flareups... It's not exactly scandalous, as far as I'm aware.

@special_boots: There's another, longer thread about this up top, but I don't see what the big scandal is either. I get a cold sore once in a while and while it's really annoying, it doesn't make a dirty whore, because they aren't the same type of strain. I think the first type is more likely to give you cold sores, the second type is more likely to give you genital sores. Although there are more reports lately of type one giving you stuff on your junk, if I'm reading it right.

@lalaland13: Even if they were the same type of strain, it doesn't make you a "dirty whore." Anyone who is having sex is susceptible to herpes, either type. There is nothing more scandalous about it than the fact that I had plantar warts on my feet as a child.

@special_boots: It's really not that big of a deal. I wouldn't want to rub my face all over someone with a quarter-sized cold sore, but I also wouldn't want to make out with someone with a pimple on their lip, or something like that.

I think the majority of people that are like "did you see the cold sore? eww!1!!11" are the ones with raging, untreated gonorrhea.

You know what saddens me the most about what Kate Winslet said? It's the fact that it's so fucking half-assed and passive. It's so careless. I had always understood her to be someone who thinks things through carefully, but that quote? Is the very definition of lazy thinking.

If she'd said, "You know, I'm not actually comfortable with being labelled as a feminist because it carries a whole lot of social and psychological cargo that just doesn't fit me right or represent my particular view of humanity," I'd have some respect for it. I'd disagree, vehemently. But I'd respect it.

The sloppy thinking that she's spinning here, though? Not impressive, Kate. I say it with deep love in my heart: DISAPPOINTED!

@autonaimee: Lucky! I guess I haven't met that many people that have never in their lives had a cold sore; I would normally get one every 2-3 years in the corner of my mouth, starting very young, usually brought on by dry, cold weather. My doctor was always like, "whatevs, as long as it isn't frequent most people will get some kind of oral herpes strain at some point in their lives. Put on chapstick and call it a day."

@LaFemme: I don't either. My mum does, though. She'll get them every couple of years but it was never a big deal. In fact, I didn't even know her cold sores were oral herpes until our day of STD education in high school health class. I still think it's nice that she managed not to pass it along to her children.

@LaFemme: I haven't ever had a cold sore. My family shares towels, drinks and food regularly, but none of them ever get cold sores, either -- tho my diabetic dad gets cracks at the corners of his mouth sometimes. Cold sores aren't always the result of "genital" herpes (type 2), sometimes they are from a different herpes simplex (type 1), but you can transmit both orally and genitally.

I love living with a medical school student, you learn all kinds of random tidbits.

@taranwanderer: You may be a carrier of the herpes virus. It's technically possible that you don't have it, but it's extremely unlikely that you'd avoid it if your mum does. Close family proximity, and all that.

I'm the only one in my family that doesn't get cold sores, and until I was twenty three, I thought I'd just been careful enough not to have gotten the virus myself. Then I got fun fun Bell's Palsy, and my GP told me that it was caused by the herpes virus attacking my facial nerves. So even if I don't get cold sores, those cranky herpes virus dudes are still cruising around my system like hoons on a weekend joyride. Bastards.

Bell's Palsy got better, though. So there's that. White blood cells FTW.

@ASmallTurnip: About 80% percent of Americans have the virus but not everyone actually manifests the sores - for many people, the virus is dormant. So just because you haven't had a cold sore doens't mean you don't have the virus. I hate hate hate hate the stupid stigma people still associate with cold sores like they're at STD (which shouldn't be stigmatized either, but that's another story.)

@homochka: Yeah, I just looked it up and apparently 90% of Americans will be a carrier of oral herpes by age 50, so it is more likely than not that even if you have not had a cold sore, you have or will have some strain of the virus.

Although I have had cold sores ocasionally in the past, I am lucky that they are very rare.

@ASmallTurnip: Yeah, this. I had a friend who didnt have any outbreaks and then got one up by her temple. Apparently the virus runs along the nerves and can minifest in other areas besides just the lips. It first looked like acne, but no. Herpes up by your ear.

this is what i'm confused about. my bf and i both had a cold sore outbreak this summer on our lips and it ruined our lives for about a month. neither of us have had one since, but we're terrified about spreading it and have completely cut off doing oral. which is NOT great for either of us. can you spread type 1 to the genitals? i thought only type 2 could appear in both places. obviously we wouldn't do anything while having an outbreak, but I don't even want to take the chance any other time :(

Anointytoity (s/p?) is basically correct. The medical community is a bit fuzzy on this issue, but the general consensus is that about a week before a cold sore pops up (how you know when that is, I'll never know) and a week after the cold sore goes away, along with the entire time the cold sore is visible, are the times that you should abstain from oral with each other. You're probably safe during times not within these windows. However, types 1 and 2 are spreadable either way. Meaning if you have type 2, you can get type 1 from contact and vice-versa.

On a side note, you can always use a condom to give him oral, and there is also a female condom for this exact purpose. It may sound weird at first, but they demonstrated it in my human sex class and it seemed like a good idea.

@breccia: They call type 2 "genital" because it "prefers" genital tissue -- ie, infects it more readily, and appears on that tissue more frequently during outbreaks. Herpes type 1 "prefers" sino-mucosal membranes (your nose/mouth/eye area). But you can spread both types, both ways. And you can also spread them when you don't have sores, in fact, herpes is at it's highest incident of spreading in the days BEFORE an outbreak. If you're really concerned, use dental dams and condoms, and check with your doctor (of course, hopefully this goes without saying) about getting a scrip. Medicating herpes has come light years in the past few years and it's really not that big of a deal.

@autonaimee: From my dialup days, I have a habit of always, always using right-click to open links in a new window or a new tab. It's kind of a nervous tic I have. When I had limited bandwidth, I didn't want to "lose" what I was looking at in the first window, so now my muscular memory is trained to always open content in a new window or tab.

I know this probably doesn't help you. I'm just a weirdo.
