Juicy Campus buys into the view that women are objects to be exploited for and commodified as sex and/or entertainment. Not only does the site reward posters for publishing their exploits online, it does so without making the posters take responsibility for their words. The "virtual bathroom wall" created by a man provides a clear illustration of the social oppression felt by women who cannot identify specifically from where their oppression comes. Men may also be oppressed by the rhetoric used on the site, but not in the same way. Men's sexuality is socially expected to be more explicit and therefore comments about "easy" men are not likely to be taken seriously, nor are they likely to cause a negative reaction.
Ivester's claim that women "have to start developing a sense of humor" about the sexist posts labeling them as "whores" and "sluts" indicates that he takes no responsibility for his part in creating the forum and he seems to blame the women who take offense to the comments posted. Perhaps women should more aggressively retaliate against the comments made about them, but the set-up of the forum with anonymous posters means that women cannot confront their attackers and are likely to be called whiney or defensive if they were to challenge the false claims. Asking women to take lightly the rude attacks that victimize them implies that women's concerns are not to be taken seriously and should be overlooked in favor of more serious subject matter.
Unfortunately, the right to freedom of speech means that Juicy Campus cannot be removed as long as people are willing to read the degrading posts featured on the site. Therefore, women especially should stop frequenting it, not just because of fear of not getting a job, but also because it encourages scandalous gossip that demeans women across college campuses. Women at universities are going to become the leaders of America in the near future and should reject any forum that debases other such women.
They just banned it at my school. It's just a forum for shallow shit-talking about people you barely know. Just the same old mean shit about "ugly" girls and "whores." I mean, maybe we have these conversations amongst ourselves, but why in the fuck does that give us the right to put it on the internet? It takes all the internet's potential for communication and discussion and learning and makes it ugly and useless. Fuck this website, I hope more schools ban it.
ok, there was a post on something like this a few weeks ago, but it was a regular site, not for schools, but for regular life and people. anyone know what it was? i wanna check it out to see if anyone i know is on there. please please please let me know!
We have a similar site run on our campus THROUGH Juicy campus and it's awful.
being at a liberal arts school all these middle class white liberals are shocked when they see people being racist, sexist, or homophobic on the website. "This couldn't happen on OUR campus!" Well, it does, says the gay arab muslim woman. Yes, it does.
It's weird that this post went up today since I hadn't thought about Juicy in ages (it gets old fast, I swear).
Last fall when my school was in the throws of Juicy fever a rumor went up about our Student Government Pres (a guy) and an exec VP (a girl). She was dating someone else at the time and apparently the rumor on Juicy contributed to their break up... after which she DID start dating the SG president.
Now this would all just be pointless rumor mongering except the two now-graduated SG types just got engaged. Even something as horrible as Juicy can be even slightly redeemed-- it let the two of them get together.
Criminal - Endangerment and inciting crime. For civil suits - stress.
The stuff that's being published about these girls doesn't just hurt their reputations, it paints them as sluts, which puts them in the position of being more likely to be the victim of a sex crime.
Whoever ends up suing the guy is going to make a big juicy pile of money.
People have posted HORRIBLE things about me on this site. It disturbs me that they will never be taken down. It disturbs me even more that this anguish is the site's whole purpose.
Just to be clear, the GW Hatchet is actually the student newspaper of George Washington University, not Georgetown. Georgetown's two major student papers are The Hoya and The Voice.
wow. that site is BRUTAL. Then again, I went to a really tiny college so everyone was able to spread vicious rumors face to face, so it seems kind of unnecessary. And, actually, it's probably useless at a big school too. What are the odds of someone at a place like UT Austin or Ohio State even knowing who the hell the people they talk about even ARE? In essence, the site seems to serve no real purpose except to give people a chance to be an asshole in a completely anonymous way. If you need to do that, go start an account on /b/
I actually checked out the topics on my alma mater's site (yeah, teeny little Claremont McKenna is on there) and the topics included the prerequisite "cutest freshman guy" "cutest freshman girl" and "biggest bitch" but also "joe biden" "sarah palin" and the all-important topic "who's going to win IM waterpolo" Good to know CMC is as I left it - a bunch of dorks.

...She's a virgin.
God, I'm glad I never joined a sorority.

I think Matt Ivester is a douche for coming up with the concept, but he is not nearly as bad as the people that keep it going.
